Shine On Brightly is the second studio album by the British progressive rock band Procol Harum . It was recorded from the end of 1967 and published in the fall of 1968.
The album
On the first page there are five pieces dominated by the Gary Brookers piano and the Hammond organ Matthew Fishers , with Robin Trower playing guitar as well. The second page begins with the nostalgic Magdalene (My Regal Zonophone) followed by the almost 18 minute rock Suite In Held 'Twas in I . The title of the suite is formed from the initial words of the individual parts:
In | Glimpses of Nirvana (Part 1) |
hero | Glimpses of Nirvana (Part 2) |
'Twas | 'Twas Teatime at the Circus |
in | In the Autumn of My Madness |
I. | Look to Your Soul |
The suite begins with a longer spoken passage, at the end of which a kōan from the Dalai Lama is asked about the meaning of life: Well my son, life is like a beanstalk, isn't it? This is followed by virtuoso classical and psychedelic passages, the funny 'Twas Teatime at the Circus and finally the bombastic grand finale .
Procol Harum played In Held 'Twas in I 1971 at a concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra .
Suite-like pieces have subsequently been recorded by some classic progressive rock bands, such as Ars Longa Vita Brevis and The Five Bridges Suite by The Nice , Tarkus by Emerson, Lake and Palmer , Supper's Ready by Genesis and Close to the Edge by Yes .
The album was released in Europe and the USA with different covers.
reception
Shine On Brightly reached number 24 on the US charts in 1968.
Allmusic's Bruce Eder wrote that the album broadened the definition of progressive rock, even if much of the music remains rooted in established rock genres. The suite In Held 'Twas in I comes from bands like The Nice and The Moody Blues equal in length and surpasses it in audacity. He gave the album four stars out of five.
The band Transatlantic coverte In Held 'Twas in I in 2000 on their album SMPTe as in Hero (' Twas) in I d. H. without the part ( 'Twas Teatime at the Circus ) but with a longer Glimpses of Nirvana .
