Procol Harum Live in Concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra is the first live album by the British progressive rock band Procol Harum . It was released in April 1972 and peaked at number 5 on the US charts. It was the band's most successful album in the US.

Emergence

In August 1971 Procol Harum, who had already worked with a symphony orchestra in Canada in 1969, were invited by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and The Da Camera Singers to give a concert with them at the end of their North American tour. The general conditions were not favorable - guitarist Robin Trower had left the band and was replaced by Dave Ball , Gary Brooker wrote the arrangements for Conquistador on the plane shortly before, so this piece could not be rehearsed. The concert in the 3000-seat Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton took place on November 18, 1971. Procol Harum, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and the Da Camera Singers, conducted by Lawrence Leonard, received such tumultuous applause that almost the entire program was played a second time.

In 1991 there was a reunion concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and the Greenwood Singers for the 20th anniversary.

reception

Bruce Eder of allmusic wrote that the selection of the most ambitious pieces from the band's repertoire and the presence of the orchestra made Procol Harum appear more progressive than they actually were. He gave the album four stars out of five.
