Gerry Hambling

Gerald James Hambling (born June 14, 1926 in Croydon , Surrey , England , † February 5, 2013 in Burwell , Cambridgeshire ) was a British film editor who was nominated six times for the Oscar for best editing and thus alongside Frederic Knudtson to those who were nominated most often in this category without receiving an Oscar . He was best known for his collaboration with film director Alan Parker . In the course of his career he was responsible for the film editing of over 50 productions . He was also involved in sound design in more than ten films in various functions .

life and work

Hambling started in 1953 at Die Bettleroper in the sound editing department, before he was mainly active as a film editor with the film Dry Rot from the mid- 1950s .

At the 1979 Academy Awards , he was nominated for the Oscar for the best editing for the first time, namely for 12 o'clock at night - Midnight Express (1978). For this film he also received the British Academy Film Award (BAFTA Award) for the best editing for the first time . For Fame - Der Weg zum Ruhm (1980) he was nominated again in 1981 for an Oscar, as well as for the BAFTA Award / Best Editing , and for an "Eddie", the award of the guild of American cinema editors ( American Cinema Editors , ACE).

After a further nomination in 1985 for the British Academy Film Award for editing in Another Country , he received another Oscar nomination in 1989 for Mississippi Burning - Die Wurzel des Hasses (1988) and won an "Eddie" as well as an "Eddie" in 1989 for editing this film also in 1990 the BAFTA Award.

In the course of his career he worked alongside Alan Parker with film directors such as Nick Hamm , Ridley Scott , Julien Temple , Jim Sheridan , Gianfranco De Bosio and Marek Kanievska .
