Moses is a monumental film from 1975 and tells the life story of Moses , the man who led the people of Israel out of Egyptian slavery and who brought the Ten Commandments to the people on Mount Sinai .
The American first broadcast of the six-part mini-series of 50 minutes took place on March 26, 1976, the German took place on October 28, 1976.
action
Pharaoh Ramses II first enslaved the Israelites and decided to drown their newborn boys in the Nile . Only one boy survives when his mother Jochebed abandons him in a basket on the river. It is here that Seto's daughter Bithia finds the child and raises it as her own. She calls the boy Moses.
20 years later - Moses is an adult - he accidentally kills an Egyptian overseer and flees into the desert. At the foot of Mount Sinai, the former prince lives as a shepherd with Jitro and his tribe and marries Jitro's daughter Zippora . Zippora gives birth to a son to Moses - Gersom .
When Moses was about 60 years old, God appeared to him at the burning bush and asked him to free his enslaved people.
With his Israelite brother Aaron, Moses confronts the new Pharaoh Merenptah and demands the freedom of Israel.
But only after long and arduous negotiations, and after God sent 10 plagues over Egypt , Ramses' releases the people.
A long walk begins - first through the Red Sea , then through the relentless Negev desert .
criticism
"As far as the cinematic realization of the thorn bush, the plagues, the passage through the Red Sea, etc. is concerned, it is made so primitive that one thinks that the trick technology is still in its infancy."
" Like other biblical epics before, Moses is an action-oriented adventure yarn."
The Lexicon of International Films criticizes the "outdated and provincial film adaptation, which reduces Old Testament events to colorful adventurousness."
background
This monumental film was created by the producers of " Jesus of Nazareth (film) ", which allows realism, faithfulness to the Bible and new interpretations alike.
The film was shot on location in Israel and also in Morocco .
Burt Lancaster's 28-year-old son William Lancaster plays the young Moses in this film.
The uncut version (360 minutes) was also released on video (but not in the German version) as was the heavily shortened version (136 minutes) in 1993 .
