Jim Sheridan (born February 6, 1949 in Dublin ) is an Irish film producer , director and screenwriter . His best-known films include In the Name of the Father and My Left Foot .

Career

Jim Sheridan studied literature and philosophy in Dublin . He was the founder of a theater group and also appeared as an actor himself. From 1976 to 1980 he was employed as artistic director at the Projects Art Center. In 1981 he and his family immigrated illegally to the USA via Canada . In New York City he was director of the New York Irish Arts Center from 1982 to 1987. At the time, several of his plays were being performed on various stages. In 1989, Sheridan's movie My Left Foot, About a Disabled Writer, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, was released in cinemas. This film received numerous awards, including five Academy Award nominations (including Best Screenplay, Best Director ) and two Academy Awards (Daniel Day-Lewis for Best Actor and Brenda Fricker for Best Supporting Actress).

In 1990 Sheridans produced his next film: The Field . For this, lead actor Richard Harris received both an Oscar and a Golden Globe nomination for best actor.

In 1993, Sheridan's third feature film was made in the name of the father . Daniel Day Lewis and Emma Thompson can be seen in the leading roles . The processed Northern Ireland conflict brought the film the Golden Bear at the Berlinale 1994 , eight Oscar nominations and the Italian David di Donatello .

Jim Sheridan also worked with actor Day Lewis on his next project, The Boxer . The film ran in 1998 as the opening film at the Berlinale in Berlin. He was also nominated for two Golden Globes.

Sheridan also worked as a producer. Among other things, he produced the drama Mothers and Sons (1996) with Helen Mirren and Fionnula Flanagan in the leading roles. The script is also by Jim Sheridan and again the story revolves around problems in Ireland.

In 2002, Sheridan made a name for himself again when he directed the film In America . He wrote the script for this film together with his daughters Naomi and Kirsten Sheridan . America received three Academy Award nominations (Best Supporting Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay).

In 2005 Jim Sheridan worked on several film projects, including Get Rich or Die Tryin ' and Da Vinci's Mother .

In 2009 he worked on the film adaptation of the book Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob by Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill. The film Black Mass was completed in 2015, directed by Scott Cooper , after being directed by Barry Levinson .
