Literary template
Sebastian Barry's novel The Secret Scripture from 2008 served as a literary model for the film. In 2009 a German translation with the title Ein Verborgenes Leben was published . The novel was inspired by a story Barry's mother once told him about a relative: “We were driving through Sligo and my mother pointed to a hut and told me that my great-uncle's first wife lived there before she was brought in from her family an insane asylum was set up. She couldn't tell me more about her than that she was beautiful. Once I heard my grandfather say about her that she was no good. That was what remained of her and the rumors about her beauty. She remained nameless [...] I felt that as a novelist it was almost my duty to bring her back. ”The novel is closely linked to Barry's earlier work, especially The Whereabouts of Eneas Mcnulty , the eponymous character being a brother-in-law by Roseanne McNulty is.
