The 41st Toronto International Film Festival took place September 8-18, 2016. The first films were announced on July 26, 2016, including the opening film The Magnificent Seven by Antoine Fuqua . Celebrated, among others, the films Deepwater Horizon by Peter Berg , All I See Is You by Marc Forster , American Pastoral by Ewan McGregor , LBJ by Rob Reiner , Lion - The Long Way Home by Garth Davis , Planetarium by Rebecca Zlotowski , Queen of Katwe by Mira Nair , A Hidden Life - The Secret Scripture by Jim Sheridan and A United Kingdom by Amma Asante have their world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival 2016. The German co-production Kati Kati celebrated its world premiere in the Discovery section . A total of 397 films were presented, including 101 short films. 138 films celebrated their world premieres at the festival. The film La La Land by Damien Chazelle was on the final evening of the festival after an election by the audience with the Grolsch People's Choice Award honored.

The opening film was The Magnificent Seven by Antoine Fuqua selected. At the presentation of the film in a prominent place, the organizers said that with its diverse cast and captivating staging, the film redefined the epic of the western in our age. The critics also often said that the cast is a combination of the most diverse ethnic groups that the cinema currently needs. Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter noted that the entire Toronto International Film Festival in 2016 was all about diversity. In addition to African-American director Antoine Fuqua, some of the Magnificent Seven also attended the premiere of the film , including Mexican actor Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Korean actor Byung-hun Lee .
