action

Paris in 1943: Laura works as a cloakroom and meets Eva again here. Both know each other from the pre-war period and remember earlier times. A few years earlier, Laura and her little sister Kate came to Paris from America. Kate has the gift of communicating with the dead, and both hold spiritual sessions in front of large audiences or private individuals. Your first client who wants a private spiritual session is film producer André Korben. During the session at his house, Korben suddenly feels like he is being strangled by a man. Laura breaks off the séance. Korben claims the man in the leather coat was his brother.

The film industry is down and Korben promises success through innovation at his company's general meeting. He has the idea of filming a séance with Kate and Laura and capturing the ghost that has been summoned, which would be a sensation. Laura and Kate move to Baskets. The shooting of the séance fails, but Korben and his director Servier notice that the camera loves Laura. Although she is not a medium , she is hired as an actress for a new film Serviers. It should play a medium and film advertising should ultimately present it as a real medium. At a party, Laura and Kate meet Eva, who does not like the spiritual, but flirts with Korben. In addition, Laura and Kate meet Professor Ulé here, who examines the metaphysical. The celebration ends in a snowball fight.

Korben declines more and more of Kate's skills and performs numerous private individual séances with her. He wants to find out who the strange man he meets in the seances is. Meanwhile, times are changing and xenophobia is increasing in the country. Laura goes to filming by the sea with Servier and meets more and more anti-Semites among the actors in the film . Rumors circulate that Korben is actually Jewish. Laura, who stands by him, is insulted as the "whore of the Jew". Meanwhile in Paris, Korben continues to try to bring the spirit of the séance to the screen. In the institute of Professor Ulé, he conducts séances with Kate under scientific conditions and finally realizes that the strange man is really his father, who suddenly disappeared. He also sees an appearance on the film that the co-owners of the film production company cannot recognize. Servier accuses him of having lost all sense of reality.

Laura realizes that Kate is getting worse and worse and decides to stop the seances. Kate eventually collapses and receives news that she has leukemia . She sees the diagnosis as logical, since it is predetermined that she must meet the dead. Korben is accused of embezzlement of funds by his colleagues; he should resign. Since he is Polish and his real name is Korbinski, the employees of the film production company are particularly hostile to him. Korben is arrested and tries in vain to get in touch with the Justice Minister through Laura in order to revise the wrong decision. Meanwhile, Kate is taken to a clinic in Biarritz . At the trial of Korben in 1941, the latter noticed that everything was being filmed and collapsed.

Paris 1943: Laura reports to Eva that Korben was sent east after the trial two years ago. Nobody knows what has become of him. Kate passed away the previous winter. Eva tells Laura that Servier was looking for her and wants to hire her for his next film. Laura accepts.
