Venice International Film Festival 2016
The 73rd Venice International Film Festival ( Italian 73rd Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica ) took place at the Lido from August 31 to September 10, 2016 . Along with the Berlinale and the Cannes Film Festival, they are among the three most important A festivals in the world and are under the direction of Alberto Barbera for the fifth time .

Lav Diaz 's film Ang Babaeng Humayo (English-language festival title: The Woman Who Left ) won the main prize of the competition .
The Italian actress Sonia Bergamasco was chosen to host the opening ceremony and the final award gala . The film festival opened with Damien Chazelle's musical La La Land with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in the leading roles. In sympathy for the Accumoli earthquake , which occurred a few days before the start of the festival, with almost 300 dead, the festival management decided to cancel the gala dinner and the reception on the beach at the Grand Hotel Excelsior , which were scheduled after the opening ceremony .
Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jerzy Skolimowski , who received the Golden Lion as an honorary award for a life's work , were already the winners .

Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jerzy Skolimowski received the Golden Lion in 2016 as a lifetime achievement award . The French actor Belmondo became the figurehead of the Nouvelle Vague with Out of Breath (1960) and subsequently advanced to become the existentialist figurehead of the rebellious youth of the 1960s. In 1965 he was represented with the lead role in the crime film Elf am Nacht also in the competition of the Venice Film Festival. "Thanks to his fascinating face, incredible charm and extraordinary versatility, he has played roles in dramas, adventure films and even comedies that made him a star, universally respected by committed directors and escapist cinema alike," said Alberto Barbera. The Polish screenwriter and director Skolimowski competed four times in the competition for the Golden Lion and was awarded the jury's special prize for Das Feuerschiff (1985) and Essential Killing (2010). Barbera describes him as "one of the most representative representatives of modern cinema during the Nouvelle Vague of the 1960s" and alongside Roman Polanski as one of the "two filmmakers who contributed most to the renewal of Polish cinema over the same period."
