The 62nd Venice Film Festival took place from August 31 to September 10, 2005 . Prizes were awarded in four categories (competition, short films, "horizons", debut film).

This year, the Italian production designer Dante Ferretti was the jury president. He presided over a jury with the following members: Cheng Ah , Claire Denis , Edgar Reitz , Emilíana Torrini , Christine Vachon and Amos Gitai .

International fiction films in 35mm or digital format took part in the main category competition. Nine prizes were awarded:

Short film - Corto Cortissimo

In the short film category, contributions were made with a maximum length of 30 minutes. The Corto Cortissimo Citroën Lion for best short film went to Xiaozhan (Small Station) by Lin Chien-ping . The UIP award for the best European short film was given to Max Jacoby for Butterflies (butterflies) . The film Layla Afel by Leon Prudovsky was awarded the special prize.

Horizons - Orizzonti

Horizons is intended to provide a picture of new trends in film art. Lech Kowalski received the Orizzonti Prize for East of Paradise . Pervye na lune (The First On The Moon) by Alexei Fedorschenko was honored with the Orizzonti Documentary Film Prize.

Luigi De Laurentiis Prize for a debut film

The winner of the Lion of the Future , the Luigi De Laurentiis Prize, is determined from all full-length debut films that can be seen in the various areas of the festival . The award was given to 13 Tzameti by Géla Babluani .
