Venice International Film Festival 2014
The 71st Venice International Film Festival ( 71st Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica in Italian ) took place from August 27th to September 6th, 2014. Along with the Berlinale and the Cannes International Film Festival, they are among the three most important A festivals in the world.
The film festival opened with Alejandro González Iñárritus Birdman , who also ran in the competition for the Golden Lion . The main prize of the competition was won by Roy Andersson's film A pigeon sits on a branch and thinks about life . The US filmmakers Thelma Schoonmaker and Frederick Wiseman , who were awarded the Golden Lion for life's work , were already the winners .
Italian actress Luisa Ranieri was chosen to host the opening and closing ceremonies. One of the venues for the 71st Venice Film Festival is the newly restored Palazzo del Cinema.

On June 23, 2014, the French film composer Alexandre Desplat was presented as the successor to last year's jury president Bernardo Bertolucci . It was the first time that a film composer chaired the jury at the film festival. Desplat was previously a jury member for the 2010 Cannes International Film Festival . As in previous years, the jury president was supported by jury members in his decision. Most of them were filmmakers:

Orizzonti
The Orizzonti (German: Horizonte ) section is dedicated to new trends in international film and primarily presents unconventional films, including feature films, documentaries and experimental films. Both short and feature films were accepted. The Chinese director Ann Hui chaired the international jury . The following jury members stood by her side:

Seven debut works by young directors were presented at the International Critics' Week ( Settimana Internazionale della Critica - SIC ). There was also the Iranian opening film Melbourne by Nima Javidi and the Italian film Arance e martello by Diego Bianchi , which closed the week of critics.
