Venice International Film Festival 2020
The 77th Venice International Film Festival ( 77th Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica in Italian ) took place at the Lido from September 2nd to 12th, 2020 . Alongside the Berlinale and the Cannes Film Festival, they are among the three most important A festivals in the world and were under the direction of Alberto Barbera for the 9th time. It was the first major film festival held since the COVID-19 pandemic . The main prize was awarded to the feature film Nomadland by Chloé Zhao .
background
While the 73rd Cannes Film Festival scheduled for May 2020 was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic , Luca Zaia , President of the Veneto Region , confirmed on May 24th, 2020 that the Venice Film Festival should take place as planned in early September 2020, with some restrictions after some work on the films was interrupted due to the pandemic. On July 7, 2020 it was announced that fewer films will be shown than in previous years. The Venezia 77 and Orizzonti rails have been retained , the organizers have decided not to use the Sconfini rail . The list of films was presented in Rome on July 28, 2020. The Venice Virtual Reality section is to be shown online.
As part of the hygiene and distance rules, the number of demonstrations was increased so that the visitors can better distribute themselves. Two new open-air cinemas were also built. Visitors must wear mouth and nose protection during film screenings. Tickets can only be bought or reserved online; every second seat should remain empty. At events in closed rooms, the data of the participants is recorded in order to be able to trace possible chains of infection. The temperatures of cinema guests and press representatives are to be measured at several points in the venue.
Opening and honorary award winner
The Italian actress Anna Foglietta was chosen as the presenter of the opening ceremony and the final award gala. In addition to Alberto Barbera, Carlo Chatrian ( Berlin ), Thierry Frémaux ( Cannes ), Lili Hinstin ( Locarno ), Vanja Kaluđerčić ( Rotterdam ), Karel Och ( Karlovy Vary ), José Luis Rebordinos ( San Sebastián ) and Tricia Tuttle ( London ) will attend the opening ceremony ) seven other artistic directors of important international European film festivals were invited, some of whose events had to be canceled or postponed due to the pandemic. In a joint appeal, they want to show solidarity to remember the importance of art and cinema as well as the battered film industry. Also at the opening ceremony, the son of the Italian film music composer Ennio Morricone, who died in July 2020, is to conduct the Roman Sinfonietta orchestra , which is to play works by his father. Ennio Morricone received the Golden Lion for life's work in 1995.
British actress Tilda Swinton and Hong Kong director Ann Hui were awarded the Golden Lion as a lifetime achievement award.
The Italian drama Lacci by director Daniele Luchetti with Alba Rohrwacher , Luigi Lo Cascio and Laura Morante was selected as the opening film.

jury
The jury president of the international competition (Venezia 77) , in which, among other things, the Golden Lion is awarded for the best film at the festival, was the Australian actress Cate Blanchett . Blanchett was awarded the Coppa Volpi for Best Actress in I'm Not There at the 64th Venice Film Festival in 2007 and was jury president at the 71st Cannes Film Festival in 2018 .
The following six jury members supported the jury president in awarding the prizes:
- Matt Dillon , American actor
- Veronika Franz , Austrian director and screenwriter
- Joanna Hogg , British director
- Nicola Lagioia , Italian writer
- Christian Petzold , German director
- Ludivine Sagnier , French actress
At the end of August 2020, US actor Matt Dillon was named a member of the jury. The sixth member of the jury was originally planned to be the Romanian filmmaker Cristi Puiu , who was unable to attend the festival due to unforeseen difficulties.
Competitors for the Golden Lion
The official program for the 77th edition of the festival was presented at the press conference on July 28, 2020. 18 feature films compete in the competition for the Golden Lion, including the documentary filmmaker Gianfranco Rosi , a former competition winner. After in the last few years there has been some violent criticism of the lack of equal rights in the invitations, eight female directors were represented this year. Festival director Barbera emphasized that the selection was made “solely on the basis of quality and not as a result of a gender quota”. Critics highlighted the lack of unfinished American film productions as well as a majority of Italian contributions. However, this would make the selection more diverse compared to previous editions.
