Film festival
A film festival is a periodic cultural and economic event at which various current film productions are shown, discussed and usually evaluated by a jury or the audience and awarded film prizes at a specific location , which does not necessarily include a financial contribution.
History and Development
overview
The first film festival took place in Venice in 1932 . Moscow followed in 1935 with the Moscow International Film Festival .
However, many of the major film festivals are foundations of the late 1940s and 1950s. This includes not only festivals in Europe such as the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Karlsbad) and the Locarno Film Festival , but also festivals on other continents such as the Festival Internacional de Cine de Mar del Plata in South America or the Kolkata Film Festival in Asia .
The festivals of Berlin , Cannes and Venice are considered to be the most important film festivals in the world. Their prices have for the art of film a similar status as the Oscars for the mainstream audience.
Many film festivals focus on them
- content-related topic - environmental film, women's film, bicycle film,
- Genre - short film festivals , silent films , television films, or
- Festivals with films of regional origin.
Sections
In the design of film festivals, certain sections have emerged, but these cannot be found at all festivals.
Competitions are often divided into international and national competitions as well as competitions based on film genres. They are often decided by a jury and end with the awarding of film prizes . Films outside of the competition are shown in so-called panorama sections .
Tributes and retrospectives , for example, are dedicated to a particular director. Country priorities are sometimes referred to as focus .
There is often a film market for industry representatives . Its films can be found in the catalog of the respective festival.
Many film festivals organized supporting programs with other cultural events, panel discussions, conferences and advanced training seminars for filmmakers.
classification
The international film producers association Fédération Internationale des Associations de Producteurs de Films (FIAPF) sees itself as a global interface between film festivals and the film industry and certifies that international film festivals have met certain requirements (= accreditation ). The annual FIAPF lists of accredited festivals are generally seen as a measure of the international importance of a film festival.
FIAPF distinguishes between these categories:
- Festivals with international competition ( A festivals )
- Festivals with specialized international competition
- Festivals without international competition
- Documentary and short film festivals
The international film critic association Fédération Internationale de la Presse Cinématographique (FIPRESCI) awards its own film prizes at selected film festivals. The presence of a FIPRESCI prize at a film festival is also an indication of the international reputation of the festival in question, especially since FIPRESCI awards its prize at events that are different from those that are accredited by FIAPF.
Younger development
The European Coordination of Film Festivals (ECFF) , the lobby group for European film festivals based in Brussels , assumes there will be up to 800 film festivals in the member states of the European Union , including around 160 short film festivals . These estimates are an understatement, because the French short film agency Agence du court métrage alone has over 220 short film festivals in France alone on its Internet portal le-court.com .
The rise in the number of film festivals around the world - a trend that has been particularly evident since the 1990s - is partly explained by the emergence of new digital technologies in film production and projection ( video projectors ).
This also includes the so-called independent film festivals. Their focus on independent film as a distinguishing feature from conventional festivals remains vague, as the term independent film in its original meaning is aimed at films that have been produced outside the major Hollywood studios. In this sense, most film festivals show independent films. Rather, a common characteristic of independent film festivals is the lack of an established film market. An early example is the American Sundance Film Festival (since 1978), which, with the argument that it was no longer “independent” enough, got a competing independent film festival through the Slamdance Film Festival in 1995 .
Another recent development is the emergence of festivals (especially for short films ) on the Internet , which challenge the re-evaluation of the term film festival.
A festivals
Film festivals with international competition that are accredited by the FIAPF film producers association are considered A festivals .
The following A-festivals are accredited by FIAPF in 2018:
