Pink Apple
Pink Apple is the most important gay and lesbian film festival in Switzerland and takes place every spring in Zurich and Frauenfeld .
history
Pink Apple was founded in 1997 by a handful of film enthusiasts in Frauenfeld in the canton of Thurgau. The Swiss “Apple Canton” - also known as “Most India” due to its many apple trees - was the inspiration behind the name. The aim was to «promote homosexual emancipation and acceptance» in the province - and that on a cultural basis. The festival was held for the first time in April 1998 - with ten films and a large crowd in the small Cinema Luna in Frauenfeld.
Pink Apple came to Zurich in the wake of the lesbian and gay EuroGames that took place there in 2000: At that time, the program comprised seven screenings with seven films in the Arthouse Movie and was a small success from the start. Since then, the festival has grown continuously and shifted its focus towards the big city, where the growing popularity underpinned the need. In 2003, Pink Apple opened for the first time in Zurich, where it has since grown to up to 85 performances in eight days.
In addition to the current film program, which shows the latest works on the subject of homosexuality and transgender , the history of gay and lesbian film is also honored with classics every year. In recent years, the festival has been devoting a supporting program to current political or topic-specific issues - always in connection with queer cinema.
In the meantime, the gay and lesbian festival Pink Apple has become the most important of its kind in Switzerland: with around 130 events and just as many films that cover all genres and styles, from short to long. International and national guests increase the attractiveness of the festival. The audience has increased from an initial 500 to around twenty times: in 2017 - when it was held for the 20th time - there were 10,000 visitors. As before, the festival will also take place in his birthplace Frauenfeld - after Zurich, with a reduced program, with the same popularity.
Pink Apple is club-based, an independent project and not for profit. The festival is financed through sponsorship money, the income from ticket sales and contributions from foundations and public institutions. The organizing committee consists of around 30 employees.
Competitions and Prizes
In 2001 an international short film competition was held for the first time and the Pink Apple Short Film Award - in the amount of 2,000 Swiss francs - was presented by a jury of experts. In the same year there was also an audience award in which the visitors judge the feature-length films of the current program using voting cards. The film with the best votes receives the Pink Apple Audience Award (since 2008 divided into best documentary and best feature film; since 2017, the two awards have been endowed with 1,000 Swiss francs each). Since 2015, the festival has been presenting an award for services to gay and lesbian filmmaking: the Pink Apple Festival Award.
