Robert Epstein (born April 6, 1955 in New Brunswick (New Jersey) ) is an American documentary filmmaker , director, writer and film producer .

Life

In 1985, Epstein was featured for his documentary Who Was Harvey Milk? on Harvey Milk , San Francisco's first self-confessed homosexual councilor , together with producer Richard Schmiechen with an Oscar in the category of best documentary . In 1990 he received another Oscar in the same category for his documentary Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt together with producer Bill Couturié . This documentary tells the story of the AIDS Memorial Quilt (narrator in the original film: Dustin Hoffman ).

Together with his colleague Jeffrey Friedman , he worked in 1995 in The Celluloid Closet , a documentary inspired by the book Vito Russo about the portrayal of gays in American films (spokeswoman in the original film: Lily Tomlin ), and in 2000 in Paragraph 175 , a documentation of the life stories of several men and women who were persecuted by the National Socialists for their homosexuality on the basis of Section 175 .

In 2010 he and Friedman received an invitation to compete at the 60th Berlin Film Festival for Howl - Das Geheul . In the drama, James Franco slipped into the role of the American writer Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) with Jeff Daniels and Treat Williams .

In 2013 they shot Lovelace , a biopic about porn star Linda Lovelace , starring James Franco as Hugh Hefner , among others .

Rob Epstein is a member of the Directors Guild of America and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and Professor at California College of the Arts , San Francisco . He's openly gay.
