Berlin International Film Festival 2010
The 60th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) took place from February 11 to 21, 2010.
The film festival opened with Wang Quan'an's competition entry Tuan Yuan . The non-competitive Japanese contribution Otouto by Yōji Yamada was selected as the graduation film. The main prize of the festival, the Golden Bear , was awarded to the Turkish-German contribution Bal by Semih Kaplanoğlu . According to the organizers, a new visitor record was set with 282,000 tickets sold.
With 6241 productions, more films than ever before were submitted for the festival. Of these, 392 films from 58 production countries were selected and shown in 866 screenings. 84 films were made with German participation, 123 projects came from female directors. The 17 venues were spread across Berlin's inner city districts. In addition, there were ten art house cinemas, also spread across the entire city, which presented films from various sections as part of the newly introduced “Berlinale goes Kiez ” series. The European Film Market with 970 screenings took place parallel to the film festival .
For the 60th anniversary of the film festival, an art installation was shown at the Brandenburg Gate and an almost completely reconstructed version of Fritz Lang's feature film Metropolis (1927) was premiered. Actress Hanna Schygulla and filmmaker Wolfgang Kohlhaase have already been selected as winners, and have been awarded the Honorary Golden Bear for their life's work. Yōji Yamada, Erika and Ulrich Gregor (founders of the Berlinale film series Forum ) and the Berlinale Bear foundry Noack were honored with the Berlinale Camera .
The official festival poster was presented in early January 2010. The graphic is made up of a chronological list of around 15,000 film titles that have been shown in the various sections of the film festival over the past six decades.

International competition
International jury
Werner Herzog was presented as the jury president of this year's Berlinale in mid-November 2009 . Herzog, who took part in the competition in 1968 with Signs of Life and 1979 with Nosferatu - Phantom of the Night , is one of the filmmakers who helped the new German film to gain recognition in the 1970s. He last attracted attention in September 2009 - he was the first director to compete at the 66th Venice Film Festival with two works .
Six members of the jury assisted Herzog. It was almost exclusively filmmakers:
- Francesca Comencini - Italian film director (Prize of the Ecumenical Jury 2004 for Mi piace lavorare - Mobbing )
- Nuruddin Farah - Somali writer
- Cornelia Froboess - German actress
- José María Morales - Spanish film producer (produced, among other things, last year's Golden Bear winner A Pearl Eternity )
- Yu Nan - Chinese actress
- Renée Zellweger - American actress
Movies
On December 15, 2009, the first seven of 26 films in the competition were announced, including 18 world premieres. A further 18 films followed on January 20, 2010, and on February 1 the competition was completed with the non-competitive documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop . Festival director Dieter Kosslick spoke of the fact that the 60th competition will be “characterized by a mix of styles and genres” and will feature newcomers and well-known filmmakers.
Among the 20 candidates for the Golden Bear , the main prize of the festival, were Roman Polański ( Wenn Katelbach Comes ... , 1966), Wang Quan'an ( Tuya's Wedding , 2007), Michael Winterbottom ( In This World - Aufbruch ins Ungewisse , 2003 ), Jasmila Žbanić ( Esma's Secret - Grbavica , 2006) and Zhang Yimou ( Red Cornfield , 1988) represented five previous winners. Eleven productions came from directors who were invited to the competition for the first time. Polański's European thriller The Ghostwriter focused on an author who uncovered dangerous machinations while writing the memoirs of a former British Prime Minister. In Tuan Yuan, Wang told of a soldier who fled Mao Zedong's military to Taiwan in 1949 and did not meet his lover again until decades later, while in the thriller The Killer Inside Me , Winterbottom took on a Texan law enforcement officer who was unmasked as a murderer. Žbanić dedicated himself to a young couple from Sarajevo in Na Putu . While the woman is expecting a child, her husband joins an Islamist group. In his drama San qiang pai an jing qi, Zhang Yimou told of a noodle restaurant owner who plans to get rid of his adulterous wife and her lover.
The three German-language competition entries were Der Räuber by Benjamin Heisenberg , Oskar Roehler's Jud Süß - Film Without Conscience and Burhan Qurbani's Shahada . In Heisenberg's German-Austrian co-production, Andreas Lust slipped into the role of the Austrian criminal Johann Kastenberger (1958–1988). Roehler, represented in the competition for the Golden Bear for the third time after 2003 and 2006, dramatized the making of the anti-Semitic propaganda film Jud Süß (1940) with Tobias Moretti as the eponymous hero Ferdinand Marian and Moritz Bleibtreu as Joseph Goebbels . The German-Afghan director Burhan Qurbani dedicated his first feature film to the fate of three Muslims in Berlin whose stories take place during the fasting month of Ramadan .
The opening gala and award ceremony were moderated by Anke Engelke . The competition with Tuan Yuan was opened by Wang Quan'an. The final film was the non-competitive Japanese contribution Otouto by Yōji Yamada .
