Live and act
In 1992, Max Dax founded the magazine Alert, the first magazine in German-speaking countries whose articles consist exclusively of interviews . Based on Andy Warhol's magazine Interview , the detailed interviews , which are not conducted in a confrontational style, shed light on the life and work of the respective person in an open conversation. In April 2004 the last of the 11 issues of the magazine appeared.
In 1993 he started publishing a free event magazine ( Sonic Press ) in Hamburg . In the meantime he also worked in the music business for Alfred Hilsberg .
In 2003 he worked for six issues as editor-in-chief of the WOM journal .
As a freelance journalist, Max Dax published mainly in the feature pages of Welt am Sonntag and the taz .
From 2007 to 2010 Max Dax was editor-in-chief of the music and culture magazine Spex . After relocating the editorial office from Cologne to Berlin, Max Dax took up the popular culture tradition of Spex from the 1980s and 1990s. Every two months, topics from music and art are contextualized and presented in an expanded discourse context. In an interview with the taz , shortly after he was appointed new editor-in-chief, Max Dax characterized the tradition of Spex as follows: "Political courage, a clear appearance in words, images and design, a commitment to a political and cultural avant-garde in music, modern art, fashion, photography, cinema and literature ”. He had already explained his understanding of the tasks and functions of the magazine in 2005, on the occasion of the magazine's 25th anniversary, in an “Obituary for the Bible of Pop Journalism ” in the Welt am Sonntag . In October 2010 he gave up the post of editor-in-chief. He was replaced by a dual leadership made up of the editors Jan Kedves and Wibke Wetzker.
Since April 2011, Max Dax has been editor-in-chief of the print magazine Electronic Beats , a corporate publishing magazine of Deutsche Telekom . In 2013 he published the book Spex together with the journalist Anne Waak . The book. 33 1/3 years of pop , with selected texts from Spex that document the change in the language of music journalism. In 2019 he curated the exhibition "Hyper! A Journey into Art and Music" in the Deichtorhallen Hamburg .
