The Die Gestalten Verlag is a German art publisher , who on issues such as design , illustration , architecture , photography , typography and contemporary art specializes.

history

The three college friends Robert Klanten , Markus Hollmann-Loges and Andreas Peyerl moved to Berlin in the early 1990s . They quickly got to know the key figures of Berlin's techno and cultural scene. As the graphic agency Die Gestalten , they initially took on the creation of flyers and posters for techno clubs and raves . In 1994 they started planning a book on techno art that would document the visual aspects of techno culture . In order to sound out the interest in the market, they produced order cards which were distributed via techno magazines. They received over a thousand orders, which enabled them to take out a loan. The Localizer 1.0. titled work was published in 1995 by the newly founded Die Gestalten Verlag . After the project was completed, the publisher's liquidity was very low, so Klanten was encouraged to start a business . From 1997 the number of publications grew and around four titles were published each year. Even before the publisher had a German distributor, the company was able to win Japanese and English sales partners.

From 1998 the focus was placed on books on graphic design . Even in later years, the majority of the books published by the publisher were devoted to design and art subjects. Occasionally, however, cookbooks , travel guides or books about motorcycles and bicycles are published. Children's books are also published under the imprint Little Gestalten . The publications have been strongly geared towards the international market since the company's early stages. Around two thirds of sales are generated abroad.

In 2000, the Gestalten began, under the direction of Markus Hollmann-Loges, to design the artwork for a number of releases for the Frankfurt rock band Böhse Onkelz , starting with the album A wicked fairy tale ... from a thousand dark nights, which was released at the time .

In 2002, in collaboration with Josua Reichert, what was then the “smallest book in the world” was published, which presented the letters of the alphabet on 26 pages measuring 2.4 × 2.9 mm.

Gestalten Fonts has been offering a wide range of fonts since 2003 . Gestalten TV has been producing films about artists and innovators since 2007, which are published on the website Gestaltung.tv.

The company also offers consulting services on design . Customers include Design Hotels, Diesel, Distance, Hatje Cantz, MTV, Nokia, Redbull, Smart, Uniqlo, Volkswagen and Zumtobel.

In April 2011 the first Gestalten store was opened on the roof terrace of the Bikini-Haus in Berlin . There are other Gestalten stores in New York City and a Berlin hotel. The publisher has offices in Berlin, London, New York and Tokyo.

Since the departure of his former business partners, Klanten has run the publishing house alone and also holds all the shares. Markus Hollmann-Loges and Andreas Peyerl are now managing directors of a digital design agency called Blitzen in Berlin.

The publisher is a member of the German Book Trade Association .

At the end of August 2016, Klanten initiated insolvency proceedings under self-administration (in accordance with Section 270a InsO) to reorganize the publishing house, as part of which, after the “shop” in Berlin's Sophienhöfen , the store in the Bikini-Haus, which was last trading as Gestalten Space , was given up. In 2017, an investor was found in MairDumont who took over 50% of the shares.
