A bad fairy tale ... from a thousand dark nights is the 13th studio album by the German rock band Böhse Onkelz . It was released on March 20, 2000 as the first release on the band's own label Rule23 Recordings . The name of the album was taken from the first line from the first song on the album.

Cover design

The album cover is in shades of gray. It shows various semi-transparent shots of a big city, as well as a face with sunglasses and a mustache. In the center of the picture is the Böhse Onkelz logo and the title An evil fairy tale in white. The booklet contains three band photos of the Onkelz, on one of these photos, which extends over two pages in the middle of the booklet, the four musicians are sitting at the counter of a bar. All three photos were taken in the Kleine Nachtrevue in Berlin , a cabaret for erotic theater and burlesque dance shows. From this album on, the agency Die Gestalten , headed by Markus Hollmann-Loges in Berlin, took care of the artistic design of the artwork for many of the Böhsen Onkelz's publications.

Background information on individual songs

Onkelz 2000

The song describes the history of the Onkelz band and the last twenty years. The highs and lows are shown in text. Quotation from Stephan Weidner: “20 years of media inquisition and yet continuously pole positions in the German charts. We hope you treat us to a little malicious joy. The drama is far from over… ” .

Dark place

The song is about the fact that humans create a dark reality for themselves and can only overcome it on their own. Everyone can create their own world and make it more positive. ( "This is a dark place because you make it so! This is a dark place and you made it up!" )

Death

This title deals with people who fail to change themselves and form their own opinion. ( "Far too cowardly to undermine morality, without belief, without ideals." )

Guardian Spirit of Shit

The song describes the frustration and disappointment that arises when dreams and visions do not come true. Quote from a concert on the 2000 tour: “A song about a somewhat unpleasant situation. There are probably moments for each of us when we think that our visions and our lives are like a heap in front of us and in the end we have no choice but to meet our fate, get our asses up and make the best of it . "

lie

The text describes how a person builds a foundation of lies that has to collapse at some point. Starting with small white lies, you notice larger and larger lies and finally you realize that your whole life is made up of lies.

Jail

A song about what the emotions are like for someone who has been in prison for a long time. Quotation from Stephan Weidner: “None of us have been in jail for a long time, but in our circle of friends there are a lot of people who have described us as it is. We also get a lot of mail from prisoners who like to hear Onkelz. So it was time to write a text about how people feel behind bars. ” The song originally had the subtitle“ Where do my dreams go ”.

C'est la vie

C'est la vie is about junkies, street children etc. who live in a dead end and are very difficult to get out of there because they are caught in a vicious circle.

thank you

This song was written as a small thank you for the "Fanz" that the Onkelz have supported for decades. A line from the song: “It is time to tell you who drive us, for more than 20 years! With your help we wrote history, the story of the Onkelz and their nephews and nieces! "

It is like it is

The title of the song is meant rather ironically, because the piece is about the negative experiences with alcohol and other drugs that the band members very often had themselves.

Too much

The song Too Much is a song about the inability to manage relationships properly. The refrain: “Too many words, everything talked to death, too many dreams that never come true. Too many tears, we love each other to death. Too many thoughts that revolve around you. "

Faces of death

The song is about the media's greed for money and quotas and how the misery of mankind is best marketed. The title alludes to the video series of the same name .

Panamericana

Panamericana is an instrumental piece. The title is derived from a trans-American road network that goes from Alaska to Chile.

Joachim Gauger from laut.de rated the album with only one of five possible points. The Onkelz are now "good, honest and conventional" and have nothing new to tell.

Rock Hard magazine gave the album eight out of a possible ten points. The author Götz Kühnemund writes that the Onkelz have “completely renewed themselves” and “seem more timeless than ever because they have easily managed to write well-rounded, well-arranged songs with strong refrains”.
