Memento is the 16th studio album and the comeback album by the German rock band Böhse Onkelz . It was released on October 28, 2016 via their newly founded label Matapaloz .

Album title

The title of the album Memento comes from Latin and roughly translates as "remember". The Onkelz got the idea for this through the film Memento from 2000. There, after a traumatic event, the protagonist loses the ability to create new memories, which is why he begins to tattoo important information. The entire background of the album cover consists of tattoos of the band.

Cover design

In the foreground of the cover is the typical BO lettering with a dagger, three roses and a swallow, which is based on the cover of the very first single by Böhsen Onkelz Kill the Hippies , which was released in 1981. The title Memento as well as the previous years of the band 1980-2016 wind as a curved white banner around the BO lettering. The black and white background contrasts with this colored foreground. This consists of several hundred Onkelz tattoos from fans. In July 2016, the band had called on their fans on their website to send them photos of their Onkelz tattoos, with the promise that they would all be printed on the CD or in the booklet, thus thanking the band for their years of support, but also wants to demonstrate the solidarity and solidarity with their fans.

Background information on individual songs

God has a problem

The first song on the album is a typical Onkelz song in which the band praises themselves and celebrates their comeback.

Market and morals

The title is a criticism of the greed of capitalism , which strives for more and more power, money and fame. Among other things, there is talk of an “elitist group of merciless beings” who spread lies. The trustworthiness of democracy is also called into question.

Everyone gets what he deserves

The track is an announcement to the band's eternal critics who have wanted to put them in the right-wing extremist corner since the band was founded . Kevin Russell asks at the beginning of the piece: "Where would the Onkelz be without the media's seaman's thread?"

Anything for nothing

In the single Irgendwas für nothing , capitalism and the consumer society , which is characterized by envy and greed, are also criticized. The chorus says: “Everyone wants everything, preferably for nothing”.

Wherever we are

This song is the quietest of the album. It's about the relationships within the band. Despite all the differences and differences of opinion, the band members find each other again and again.

The boy with the sulfur wood

The piece is a semi-ballad with blues elements . In terms of content, it is about the son of a priest who is socially isolated and gives free rein to his anger at those around him by setting fire to his father's church.

According to all the rules of addiction

After all the rules of addiction deals once again with the drug past of singer Kevin Russell.

On friendship The title is another typical Onkelz song, comparable to Auf die Freunde or Thank you from previous albums. It's a song to celebrate, with the Onkelz singing about the solidarity between the band and the fans. They also refer to the fact that many fans wear the band's tattoos on their bodies: "What you wear in your skin and heart" .

52 weeks This is a song to encourage listeners. In terms of content, the point is that no matter how "bad" a year has gone, you get a new chance every year.

Manuel Berger from laut.de rated the album with three out of a possible five points. He writes that the Onkelz would seamlessly pick up where they left off in 2004: They "still have no problem with modesty and keep the well-known basic recipe." Singer Kevin Russell sounds surprisingly powerful and the loud parts of the album are "more metallic than used". Thanks to the good production, "Memento" is not like a revolution, but does what it should, is coherent and usually sounds more fresh than old-fashioned. ”On the other hand, Gonzo's guitar playing on some songs and some passages are criticized negatively.

The music magazine Metal Hammer gave the album seven out of a possible seven points. The author Matthias Weckmann thinks that the "band sounds as lively as it has not for decades". The sound would make "a lot more steam" than on dopamine and adios . The album was "compositionally great cinema" and especially the powerful and expressive vocals of Kevin Russell was "one of the biggest pluses". Memento is an album that "is fun from start to finish and takes extremely interesting, sometimes surprising turns."
