We're still far from enough is the sixth studio album by the German rock band Böhse Onkelz . It was released on August 26, 1991 on the Frankfurt label Bellaphon Records .

History of origin

Bellaphon Records was itself a distributor of Metal Enterprises . The contract was signed on January 1, 1991. With the label change, the sound quality of the recordings for the album improved compared to the previous albums, as the record company had more financial means and higher quality technical equipment could be used. The band experimented more and incorporated elements of different musical styles, so that this album again represents a musical advancement.

Stephan Weidner appeared for the first time as the producer of a Böhse Onkelz album. The Onkelz themselves see the album as an “entry into the professional phase”.

In the booklet for the album, the band sent a message to their fans and commented on the media criticism of the band as follows:

“Since the public and the media do not give us the opportunity to spread only partial truths or turn the word around in our mouths, we want to take the opportunity to tell you a lot about us and the course of our career. We are certainly not orphans, and we are aware that we have said and done things that have created a lot of controversy. Including statements that we can no longer understand. The reaction of the media is out of proportion to what really happened. At no point did we feel like a fascist band, although this is still assumed to this day. The only positive aspect of the resistance that we are met to this day is that our friendship and solidarity in the band has been strengthened. In our eyes, the solidarity between you and us has also strengthened. We know of the difficulties you have when you acknowledge us. But we are sure that one day we will take away these preconceived opinions and lies about us! Thank you for your support"

- Stephan Weidner, Peter Schorowski, Matthias Röhr, Kevin Russell : Booklet We're still far from enough , August 1991.

We haven't got enough feedback from trade magazines, but didn't get in the charts.

Cover design

The album cover, like the cover of bar terrorists , is a picture from the Watchmen comics. This shows the detail of a clock covered in blood. In the upper area there is the lettering Böhse Onkelz , at the lower edge the title wir ham 'is far from enough . What is remarkable about the picture is that the cartoonist incorporated the Roman numeral for twelve twice - once in the right place and once where the eleven should actually be.

Background information on individual songs

Only the best die young
Cover of the single
Only the best die young

With Only the best die young , the Onkelz dedicated a song to their murdered friend Andreas “Trimmi” Trimborn after they had already dedicated the previous album Es ist so far to him. According to a study, “Only the best die young” is the line most frequently read in the obituaries of young people in the new federal states.

No matter

The song " No matter what" is again about the Trimborn case: It is dedicated to the murderer of Trimborn and expresses the anger and sadness that the band did not feel punished fairly.

Another day for free

Once again, the Onkelz's first real ballad has been wasted for a day . The song is about the monotony in life and the attempts to break out of it. Sound engineer Achim Schnall took part in the composition . The piano was recorded by Frank Spannaus. Since its best-of release in 2001, there has also been a rock version of the song that works without a piano. On their last tour in 2004, they each let the fans decide which version to play.

Oh, you're looking for a fight

The Hammond organ was played by Fred Bauer from the rock band New Deal.

3'52 "

The instrumental is a bonus track for the CD version of the album. The second guitar was operated by Achim Schnall. The title is derived from the playing time of the song, but this is given on the CD as 3:51. The piece serves as the intro on the live album Live in Vienna .

We are not alone

This song is about extraterrestrial life . According to Stephan Weidner, he wrote this song for Kevin Russell because it had fallen into a downright UFO madness at the time it was written. At the end of the song the five-note melody is heard with the aliens in the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind of Steven Spielberg contact with people. This melody comes from the film musician John Williams . Here, too, the keyboards were recorded by Achim Schnall.

Sales figures and awards

We're still far from enough was awarded a gold record in 1997 for more than 250,000 units sold in Germany . This makes it the group's earliest album to receive a record award.

The Mannheim journalist Mike Seifert († January 2020) from the music magazine Rock Hard rated the album in 1991 with eight out of ten possible points. He wrote:

“Musically diverse as probably never before, the Frankfurt quartet is mature, full of ideas and extremely well-versed in terms of craftsmanship. Ten strong songs (four more on CD, including two instrumental tracks that are really worth listening to) full of emotion, melody-conscious and first-class hard'n'heavy, lyrically actually uncontroversial (apart from the defloration song 'Das Erste Blut', perhaps), cleanly produced and sometimes brilliant arranged (for example the ballad-like 'Once again' a day has been given away ') - you can't fault it. Often stylistically Motörhead (vocals) meets Rose Tattoo meets AC / DC (the beginning of 'Show me the way' has something of 'Live Wire'), but sometimes like a cross between Hendrix and Uriah Heep in the psychedelic instrumental ' Lt. Stoned ', a completely stoned piece, you won't get bored with this album. Rather, it is constantly on the Omme and turns on, brings driving riffs, bluesy solos and dirty Hammond sounds ('Oh, they're looking for a fight'). Impeccably good. Eight bold points. "

- Mike Seifert : Rock Hard , No. 54, 1991.

Rainer Funk from the music magazine Metal Hammer rated the album on October 1, 1991 with six out of seven possible points. He wrote:

“Once again the Onkelz have succeeded in composing hymns on the running vinyl meter. Catchy choruses with that certain something, embedded in a dirty brute rock 'n roll corset, which undoubtedly shows influences from AC / DC and especially Rose Tattoo, but represents much more than just the German plagiarism of the above combos. In addition, the disc contains some real surprise moments, such as the atmospheric ballad “Another day has been given away”, in which acoustic instruments are used without exception. Lyrically, the four Frankfurters pay homage to the typical "Onkelz Way of Life": They sing about their personal experiences ("One of these nights"), celebrate themselves (title song) and fire broadsides at the journalistic snipers ("Show me the way") . "
