Rose Tattoo at a concert in Nuremberg in August 2018

Rose Tattoo is an Australian hard rock band. It was founded in the 1970s by Peter Wells . Gary “Angry” Anderson has been the singer since the beginning , whose distinctive voice is part of the band's recognition value . The use of a slide guitar is also characteristic of Rose Tattoo .

history

In the late eighties, the band broke up. It wasn't until 1993 that it made a comeback after Guns N 'Roses gave them the role of opening act in Australia on their tour there. A live DVD filmed in Boggo Road Jail from this period was released in 1994 , which is only available in Australia.

In 2002 Peter Wells developed prostate cancer and was represented by other guitarists on the last two tours, including a. by Dai Prichard. In the fall of 2005, Wells released his last solo album, Mothers Worry . In September of the same year a large benefit concert was organized in Sydney for the benefit of Peter Wells, in which the who's who of the Australian rock scene participated. On March 27, 2006, he died of his illness.

In 2005 Rose Tattoo played at the “Vaya Con Tioz” final festival of the Böhsen Onkelz at the Lausitzring in front of 120,000 spectators, which was their biggest appearance to date.

Ex-Rose-Tattoo bassist Ian Rilen , composer of the classic band Bad Boy For Love , was also diagnosed with cancer in June 2006 and died on October 30, 2006 of the effects of the disease.

In August 2006 Rose Tattoo played together with the Böhse-Onkelz guitarist Matthias Röhr at the Wacken Open Air and the “Rock Over Hamburg” festival.

In June and July 2007, Rose Tattoo played again as opening act for Guns N 'Roses in Australia, according to a message on the band's official homepage.

Then her longtime bassist Steve King (now with The Terraces) left the band, he was replaced by Geordie Leach. Leach is a member of Rose Tattoo, along with Anderson and Cocks, which can be heard on the band's first two studio LPs.

In April 2009, the band's management announced that guitarist Mick Cocks had liver cancer . He died on December 22, 2009.

Despite several suggestions regarding the dissolution of Rose Tattoo (including on the band's homepage and in an interview by Angry Anderson), the band announced the signing of a new record deal with Golden Robot Records on their homepage at the end of March 2016. This contract includes a new edition of the studio album Blood Brothers from 2007, the release of a concert from 1983 in the form of a live album (2017: Live in Brunswick - at the Bombay Bicycle Club ) and the release of a new studio album in 2016. The new studio album has not yet been released ( Status 2019). But also in 2018/2019/2020 Rose Tattoo are on tour both in Australia and in Europe (for example Wacken, Munich, Paris, Madrid).

effect

Rose Tattoo is often referred to as the “little AC / DC” in Australia. Both bands serve the same genre and partly had the same producers (Vanda / Young), but AC / DC was able to achieve a higher level of awareness.

Rose Tattoo were role models and orientation for other bands, including the Norwegian Backstreet Girls . The American rock band Guns N 'Roses was also influenced by Rose Tattoo in their early phase and recorded a cover version of the Rose Tattoo song Nice Boys , released on the EP Live?! * @ Like a Suicide . With their preference for large tattoos , which were by no means socially acceptable in the late 70s and early 80s, Rose Tattoo also exerted an influence on the later image of the rock and metal scene on the American west coast. The American singer Helen Schneider landed a top ten hit in Germany with the song Rock 'n' Roll Gypsy , derived from the rose tattoo song Rock 'n' Roll Outlaw .

In 2006 the band was honored with the induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame .

Others

In his spare time, singer Gary Anderson takes care of disadvantaged children in Australia. In an interview on Australian television, Anderson also asked viewers to take action against child prostitution in neighboring Asian countries. He dedicated his own title ( House Of Pain ) to this topic on the album Pain . He worked with the role of Ironbar in Mad Max 3 alongside Tina Turner as an actor.
