Helen Schneider
Helen Schneider (born December 23, 1952 in New York City ) is an American singer and actress .
biography
The daughter of Dvora and Abraham Schneider completed his classical piano studies before a blues band by New England toured and performed with various musicians in New York.
First successes
Helen Schneider made her German TV debut on January 9, 1978 in the Saarland broadcasting program Session . She gained greater fame in Germany through an appearance in 1978 on the television program Bio's Bahnhof , where she sang Heinrich Werner's Heidenröslein as an encore. Among other things, through a tour with Udo Lindenberg in 1980, she was able to further increase her fame and celebrate greater success as a rock singer in Germany until 1984 (best singer 1981 and German Phono Academy Award : Singer of the Year 1982 - awards for her expressive voice).
With the title Rock 'n' Roll Gypsy she also had a top ten hit in the fall of 1981 and completed several tours in Germany. Her most famous albums at the time were Live in Hamburg , Crazy Lady and Schneider with the Kick. Helen Schneider was the very first western artist ever to appear in the Palast der Republik in East Berlin .
Musical career
In 1987 her career changed. The director of the Theater des Westens in Berlin , Helmut Baumann , cast her as Sally Bowles in the musical Cabaret . At the side of Hildegard Knef as Fräulein Schneider , Wolfgang Reichmann as conférencier and Utz Richter as Mr. Schultz , the production became one of the most outstanding in the recent history of the house, and Helen Schneider began working as a musical performer . After taking acting classes , several years at the theater and musical successes a. a. With Sunset Boulevard (1995–1998) by Andrew Lloyd Webber as Norma Desmond, she sings mostly chansons and songs by the composer Kurt Weill . In 1996 she sang a duet with Andrea Bocelli ( La luna sale e cala ) for Eberhard Schoener on his first Short Operas CD ( Palazzo dell'amore ). This developed in 1998 a collaboration for the farewell song for the ZDF - crime series Derrick , the Schoener supervised at that time musically relevant. From 1999 to 2001 she played Eva Perón in the musical Evita at the Bad Hersfeld Festival .
Since 2000
After A Walk on the Weill Side with songs by Kurt Weill and Stephen Sondheim , with whom she performed frequently since 1989, was Helen Schneider between 2003 and 2005 with her second one-woman show with piano accompaniment, A Voice and a Piano, a Kind of a cross-section of her musical life so far, also on tour in German-speaking countries. In 2005 and 2006 she gave several concerts in Germany with the band project M'Jobi (consisting of Mini Schulz on bass, Jo Ambros on guitar and Meinhard “Obi” Jenne on drums). With her album Like a Woman, released in 2007 , which mainly contains interpretations by popular American songwriters, she picked up on her musical work from the 1970s. In October 2008 her newest, u. a. Dream a Little Dream album, produced by Till Brönner , which contains jazz interpretations of classics from the Great American Songbook .
In 2007 she appeared for the first time as an author of children's books together with her long-time friend Linda Uruburu, who was already doing management work for her during her time as a rock singer and partly played on the synthesizer in her band .
Since August 2010 she has been on stage with Gunter Gabriel in the musical Hello, I'm Johnny Cash as Johnny Cash's wife June Carter at the Berlin Renaissance Theater . At the Bad Hersfeld Festival in 2011 she was seen again in the role of Norma Desmond in Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Sunset Boulevard , Helmut Baumann had taken on the role of Max von Meyerling in this production. At the end of 2011 a tour with the piece began, which lasted until spring 2012. On January 28, 2012, she celebrated the premiere of the play Metamorphoses in the Rampe Theater in Stuttgart . The piece deals with poems by Anne Sexton , which are based on the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm .
From September 2012 she was on stage in the Hamburger Kammerspiele with the play Der Ghetto-Swinger, based on the life of Coco Schumann , who was the guest of honor at the premiere. Since the beginning of 2014 she has played Mrs. Robinson in The Graduation Exam at the Altona Theater . In 2015 she played the conférencier in Cabaret at the Bad Hersfeld Festival.
After several successful master classes at the Stage School Hamburg , she has been teaching song interpretation since January 2018 and is part of the team of lecturers in the drama department.
Personal
Helen Schneider lived for over 40 years with the late George Nassar, who also worked as her manager. Since 1989 they lived in the mountains of Connecticut , then they moved to Europe, to the French Provence . Schneider lived in Berlin from 2007 and in Hamburg since 2018.
Her grandfather worked as a violinist in Odessa before emigrating to the United States due to the Russian Revolution in 1919. His father, in turn, was a grain dealer in Frankfurt. The ancestors of the maternal line had emigrated from Russia to the USA in the early 18th century.

- Helen Schneider released the song Rock 'n' Roll Outlaw from the Australian band Rose Tattoo from 1978 in Germany in 1981 on the album Schneider With The Kick as a cover version Rock 'n' Roll Gypsy and was very successful with it.
