Helmut Baumann (born January 31, 1939 in Berlin ) is a German dancer , choreographer , actor and musical director .

biography

Baumann studied after high school first architecture , however, the study dropped out to become a dancer. He came to the musical through dance. As a director, actor, dancer and singer he celebrated great success in this field.

In 1971, together with Jochen Ulrich , Gray Veredon and Jürg Burth, he founded the Tanzforum at the Cologne Opera, which was the first ensemble under collective direction at a city theater to focus entirely on modern dance. In 1985 Zaza Baumann became the star role in the musical La Cage aux Folles at the Theater des Westens in Berlin . He was also responsible for the production, Jürg Burth for the choreography . Until the last performance in 1990, the performances were always sold out. Baumann was artistic director and artistic director of this theater until 1999, which under him became the first German musical repertoire stage.

One of his most famous productions was Cabaret with Helen Schneider , Wolfgang Reichmann , Hildegard Knef and Utz Richter, among others . In 2015 Baumann played the fruit dealer Schultz in this musical at the Bad Hersfeld Festival . Since 2013 he has appeared at the Komische Oper Berlin in the role of the Turkish embassy attaché Mustapha Bey in the operetta Ball im Savoy .

Baumann lives in Berlin-Charlottenburg with his partner Jürg Burth (among others a choreographer at the Theater des Westens) .
