German Musical Theater Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Musical Theater Award is an award since 2014 Theater Award for musicals and connected with the musical people, which is awarded by the German Musical Academy. The German Musical Academy, whose members also include Stage Entertainment , is the industry association for the German musical field.

History and purpose

After more than a year of preparation, the German Musical Academy was founded in September 2013 by 19 people, including Thomas Hermanns , Gayle Tufts , Norbert Hunecke, Bettina Meske and Thomas Zaufke , from the informal group “Musical Interest Group”. One of the purposes of the association defined in the statutes was the creation and award of the German Musical Theater Prize . The aim of the award is to honor artistic achievements in the musical genre with a corresponding award and to give them greater public attention. The annual German Musical Theater Prize is an undoped theater prize for the German-speaking area, which aims to draw attention to the diversity, performance and artistic charisma of the musical stage. The award was introduced in 2014 in the form of an honorary award to Helmut Baumann and expanded to a total of 13 categories in 2015. In 2018 the new category "Best Revival" was added, in which new productions of German-language musicals are awarded. At the same time, the participating artists in these productions, but not the authors, were admitted to their respective categories.

jury

The board of directors of the German Musical Academy appoints a jury for each season, which sifts through the registered productions and whose voting is included in the selection of the winners with a voting weight of 50%. The previous jury members included Bernd Steixner (former musical director of the Theater des Westens in Berlin), Hartmut H. Forche (director and translator), Thomas Zaufke (composer) and Edith Jeske (librettist and lecturer).

nomination

To be nominated for the German Musical Theater Prize , registration by the producer of the musical is required. You can register for musicals that premier in German in the respective season (August 15 and ends on August 14) and are produced by public theaters or professional private theaters, production companies and festivals. The musical must be a new piece with new music, so compilation musicals and revues are not permitted. The jury visits all productions admitted to the competition and makes the nominations at the end of the season.

choice

The jury members and all full members of the Deutsche Musical Akademie eV choose the winners from the nominees in a secret ballot, whereby 50% of the voting weight is allocated to both groups.

Categories

The German Musical Theater Prize has been awarded in 13 categories since 2015 . In addition to awards that relate to the musical as a work (best musical, best composition, best book, best song lyrics), prizes are also given for the respective ensemble.
