Hamburg in the summer of 2017. The upcoming G20 summit is preoccupying the minds of the most varied of characters in a wide variety of ways. Sabine, a blogger who never leaves her apartment, senses a conspiracy in the fact that this event is being held in Germany's second largest city, of all places. Her ex-girlfriend Kata, who accompanied the event for a private broadcaster, is annoyed by the condescending behavior of summit participants like the French speaker Henry, who lives out his homosexuality with the Spanish hustler Jesus behind the chauvinistic facade and, contrary to expectations, his heart on him loses. The convinced leftists Andi and his girlfriend Frieda are looking forward to being able to show their views of the world in a publicly effective way. The convinced pacifist Frieda has no inkling that the spoiled affluent child Andi considers violence to be a legitimate means. The cashier Krissi, on the other hand, has real worries, who, of all things, has the late shift in her shop on the hot days of the summit and fears rioting. Policeman Stefan, who has not been the same since he got a bottle on his head during a demonstration, is also afraid of them. True to principles as he is, he does not want to go on sick leave - as his girlfriend, the medical student Lily recommends - even if he has not understood the political background of the summit for a long time. This doesn't even interest the young Mina from Husum - she just wants to have a party and travels with mom's car and is impressed by pimp Ricky, who pretends to be a photographer.

A dance demo in which you want to promote a better world in a peaceful and exuberant way gets completely out of hand. Frieda, Sabine, Kata, Mina, Krissi, Liliy and their strict Catholic friend Friedrich hide in Krissi's supermarket. The shop is devastated by rioters and the random community ends up closed at the police station, where Stefan grievously reproaches his girlfriend for not staying away from the demonstration as he expected. Nevertheless, he gives her his key card, with which Lily enables the other inmates to escape. Their relationship fails, as does that of Andi and Frieda, because Frieda notices that Andi has obtained a pistol and used it against the policeman Stefan. The riots continue. Kata saves Mina from the clutches of the pimp Ricky, the French speaker confesses his love for Jesus - and that he as a representative of the western world is just as ruthless and selfish as it is. The people for whom the summit broke much more than just a couple of discs, come to the end, there is only one thing that can help if you want to save this world from the abyss: "Give something!"

The title of the musical, "Welcome to Hell", is reminiscent of the protest of the same name on the eve of the G20 summit in Hamburg in the summer of 2017 , when the police and demonstrators clashed for the first time and there were street battles, especially in the Schanzenviertel.
