It is run by a charitable foundation that receives equal grants from the City of Augsburg and the Free State of Bavaria. Until 1999 the theater operated as the Städtische Bühnen Augsburg .

history

The big house on Kennedyplatz.

In 1630 the Augsburg Mastersingers bought the Welserstadel and expanded it into a theater. There master craftsmen played and sang in public , always for the betterment of the people, not for the sake of validity .

Augsburg's actual theater life began in 1665 with the construction of the Meistersinger barn by the municipal alms office on Lauterlech, in Jakobervorstadt near the St. Jakob church . Little is known of the building, it is said to have contained 15 "Stüblin" (boxes), but it was so dilapidated from the start that expensive renovations had to be carried out again and again in order not to endanger the artists and the audience. Around this time, the Meistersinger Society also dissolved.

In 1696 or 1697 the first opera was performed in Augsburg under the direction of Johann Sigismund Kusser .

In 1739 the city built its own theater for the St. Salvator Jesuit College at the then Salvatorkirche in Jesuitengasse. In 1803 it became a military riding school, in 1876 the municipal lending office, and it was destroyed in the Second World War.

In 1776 the city theater , popularly known as Komödienstadel , was built with the opportunity to perform for renowned guest ensembles. The building was a simple house with four entrance doors and had space for 900 visitors. Above the parquet there were two tiers and a gallery, adorned with a ceiling painting and a painted curtain.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart visited the theater in October 1777. His opera Don Giovanni was played here as early as 1787 (in the year of its first performance), the Magic Flute on January 21, 1793, at higher prices, by the way. On January 1, 1876, the magistrate decided to build a new representative building.

This was initially leased to the respective director, who played the theater at his own risk. The first theater director was Moritz Krüger (1833–1886). The Great House was opened with the opera Fidelio on Monday, November 26th, 1877. The prologue was given by Ernst Possart , then chief director at the Hofbühne in Munich.

On April 14, 1886 Henrik Ibsen's play Gespenster was performed as a "dress rehearsal" because the censors had banned a public performance. Ibsen was personally present. Josef Krägel was the first "Carpenter Engstrand" and Wilhelm Hellmuth-Bräm played "Pastor Manders".

In 1919 the theater was communalized. In 1938/39, during a renovation, the Ludwigsbau served as an alternative venue for the Augsburg Theater and again from 1944 (destroyed by the air raids on Augsburg) until it reopened in 1956. In 1999, it was transferred to the city's own operation.

On September 1, 2018, the municipal theater was converted into a state theater.

The listed house has to be completely renovated, and a new building is also being built. Originally, a total of 186 million euros had been estimated for this in 2016, due to increases in construction costs it had to be corrected to up to 321 million euros in 2020. Because of the state theater status, the state pays "75 percent of the eligible costs", the rest goes to the city of Augsburg. The extensive construction work is planned to be completed in 2028 (as of 2020).

management

On November 17, 2015, the Süddeutsche Zeitung reported that André Bücker will be appointed as the successor to the outgoing general manager Juliane Votteler for the 2017/18 season . On September 1, 2017, artistic director André Bücker took over the management of the theater. The new opera director is Daniel Herzog, Ricardo Fernando became the new ballet director. Domonkos Héja remains as general music director at Theater Augsburg. A team took over the artistic direction in the theater: Lutz Keßler as chief dramaturge, Sabeth Braun (dramaturge), Nicole Schneiderbauer (in-house director) and David Ortmann (in-house director).

Under the motto »addiction to the senses« the ensemble of the Theater Augsburg broke new ground. The new artistic director André Bücker sees the theater as a place of discourse in which current political and social developments are thematized: "For me, theater is a political place that reflects the social present." He places the focus on the enlightening power of theater and strengthens it the potential for education and mediation through an additional position in theater education (Imme Heiligendorff).

Through cooperation and partnerships with other cultural institutions and the independent scene, the Augsburg Theater strengthens the exchange between the city theater and city society. In addition, the renovation of the Big House requires exercise. For this reason, the 2017/18 season stands for new beginnings, upheavals and opening up of the theater. Numerous projects such as the »Tatort Augsburg« (idea and direction: David Ortmann) and the platform for interdisciplinary and intercultural theater work »Plan A« bear witness to this.
