Michael Luig (born March 16, 1950 in Dortmund ; † September 1, 2014 ) was a German conductor and music teacher .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1968, Luig attended the private music teacher seminar for piano at the municipal conservatory in Dortmund until 1972 , from 1970 he was also Fritz Lehan's assistant at the singing studio at the Hamburg State Opera and between 1970 and 1676 acted as a piano accompanist at various concerts, in particular as Song accompanist. In 1972 he passed the music teacher examination for piano.

In 1972 he began studying conducting at the Cologne University of Music with Volker Wangenheim , which he graduated with honors in 1976. Since 1975 he has worked regularly with student and youth orchestras.

From 1976/77 to 1979/80 he was engaged as a répétiteur and Kapellmeister at the Städtische Bühnen in Frankfurt am Main , which was followed from 1980/81 to 1982 by an engagement at the Saarland State Theater in Saarbrücken as first conductor and deputy general music director . He moved back to the Städtische Bühnen in Frankfurt am Main, where he was 1st Kapellmeister from 1982/83 to 1986/87. He was then engaged as 1st Kapellmeister at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf / Duisburg for the season 1987/88 and received a guest engagement at the Städtische Bühnen Bielefeld , where he conducted the almost unknown opera Das Wunder der Heliane by Erich Wolfgang Korngold .

From the 1989/90 season to November 1, 1994, Luig was general music director at the Augsburg Municipal Theaters and from then on professor at the State University of Music in Cologne, where he directed the university orchestra and a university class in conducting.

Guest performances have taken Michael Luig to opera houses in Germany and abroad. In autumn 2004 he undertook a China tour to Beijing and Shanghai , which was followed by his first appearance at the Rheingau Music Festival . Another tour took him to the USA .

After a long illness, Michael Luig passed away on the night of September 1st to 2nd, 2014.

Michael Luig had a large concert repertoire, which he developed during his collaboration in a large number of concerts with well-known orchestras such as the Munich Philharmonic, the NDR Sinfonieorchester Hannover, the Radiosinfonieorchester Berlin, the Orchester National de France, the Orchestra sinfonica di Milano della RAI and the Orchestra Communale di Bologna. Because of his special expertise, he has served on various juries, such as the Hungarian National Conducting Competition, and on commissions.

As a music pedagogue, he saw his responsibility with the next generation of musicians and led a large number of youth and university orchestras, such as the State Youth Orchestra of Rhineland-Palatinate.
