Volker Wangenheim
Volker Wangenheim (born July 1, 1928 in Berlin ; † April 23, 2014 in Altenkirchen ) was a German conductor , arranger and composer .
Life
Berlin
Wangenheim grew up in Berlin and studied violin , oboe , piano , composition and conducting at the Berlin Music Academy . In 1951 and 1952 he was accompanist and conductor at the Mecklenburg State Theater in Schwerin . Between 1951 and 1956 he was artistic director of the Berliner Musikfreunde Orchestra . From 1953 to 1959 he was chief conductor of the Berlin Mozart Orchestra , which he himself founded in 1952. From 1954 to 1957 he also conducted the Academic Orchestra Berlin and made his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic on June 22, 1954.
Cologne / Bonn
In 1957 he founded the Municipal Orchestra in Bonn, which he headed from 1963 to 1978 as General Music Director, which was renamed the Orchestra of the Beethoven Hall Bonn and which is now called the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn . In this position he conducted the world premiere of Karlheinz Stockhausen's Fresco for four orchestral groups in November 1969 . From 1957 to 1979 he also worked as artistic director of the Philharmonic Choir of the City of Bonn .
In 1969 he was one of the co-founders of the Federal Youth Orchestra , which he built up for several years as the sole conductor and with which he gave numerous concerts until 1982. In 1972 he was appointed professor at the Cologne University of Music and appointed to the German Music Council, of which he was a member until 1980 and which finally accepted him as an honorary member.
Wangenheim found his retirement home with his wife in Altenkirchen in the Westerwald .
Act
Wangenheim composed symphonies , chamber music , church music and folk song - motets . Some of his choral works were premiered by the Mendelssohn Chamber Choir Berlin under the direction of his student Volkher Häusler .
His main focus was on compositions of sacred choral music without instrumental accompaniment and in Latin, which he was encouraged to do in his youth in Berlin when listening to Gregorian chant in a Catholic church. Wangenheim contributed the chorus from the Easter song Das ist der Tag der Gott made (This is the day God made) to the 2013 choir edition of the new praise for God .
