Thomas Jung (* 1984 in Limburg an der Lahn ) is a German conductor .

Live and act

Thomas Jung grew up in Limburg- Dietkirchen and graduated from the Tilemann School in 2004 . He studied at the Hochschule für Musik Köln with Volker Wangenheim and from the end of 2010 to 2012 at the University of Cambridge and at King's College Cambridge . He was a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation , the DEY Foundation and the Richard Wagner Association .

From 2012 to 2019, Jung worked as conductor and artistic director of the Flora Symphony Orchestra Cologne and artistic director of the Studio Orchestra Duisburg. In the 2015/16 season he was Assistant Conductor and Zander Fellow with the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. In addition, he directed the opera production Moses must sing at the Munster Municipal Theaters .

Thomas Jung has been a Constant Lambert Conducting Fellow at the Royal Opera House in London since 2018 , where he conducts for the Royal Ballet and the Birmingham Royal Ballet. In June 2019 he conducted the world premiere of Didy Veldman's “Sense of Time”, music by Gabriel Prokofiev and the opening concert of the “ Boswiler Sommer ” music festival .

In addition, Thomas Jung works as an assistant and "Cover Conductor" for Bernard Haitink and is a guest conductor of the Het Gelders Orkest and the Orkest van het Oosten.

Jung is married and has one daughter.

Muted situations

For the Sydney Biennale 2018 Thomas Jung worked with the composer Samson Young . For the realization of Young's Muted Situation # 22: Muted Tschaikovsky's 5th he recorded the 5th symphony by Peter Tschaikowski with the Flora Symphony Orchestra . The work was shown from March to June 2018 at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney , from November 2018 to March 2019 as part of the Shanghai Biennale and from March to April 2019 at the Visual Arts Center in Hong Kong .

In 2019 the work received an “Award of Distinction” at Ars Electronica and in 2020 the “M + Sigg Prize”.

Awards

In 2017 Thomas Jung was awarded the Eugen Jochum Prize in Munich. In autumn 2012 he received the Filippas Engel Foundation's culture award for his commitment . Also in 2012, the youth chamber orchestra Musica Viva received first prize at the German Orchestra Competition under his direction and was also awarded the special “Best Performance” prize. In July 2020, Thomas Jung received second prize at the International Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra .
