Richard Wagner Foundation Bayreuth

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Richard-Wagner-Stiftung Bayreuth is a foundation under civil law , which looks after the artistic legacy of Richard Wagner and is supposed to preserve the Festspielhaus in Bayreuth permanently for posterity. It was built in 1973 and has owned and operated the Bayreuth Festival Hall ever since . She also elects the festival director of the Bayreuth Festival .

The statutes also regulate the management of the festival. This is generally reserved for one or more members of the Wagner family. As early as 1999, the Board of Trustees initiated the procedure for the succession of the then 80-year-old festival director Wolfgang Wagner . After almost two years of dispute, however, Wagner had insisted on his lifelong contract and thus declared the discussion about his successor to be over.

The foundation's board of directors consists of three members, each appointed by the federal government , the state of Bavaria and the Wagner family .

The members of the Board of Trustees have a total of 24 votes.

The chairman of the board of trustees is currently (April 2019) the district president of Upper Franconia, Heidrun Piwernetz . The managing director of the board of trustees is the mayor of the city of Bayreuth (currently Brigitte Merk-Erbe ). The festival has been organized by Bayreuther Festspiele GmbH since 1986, of which Wolfgang Wagner was the managing director until his resignation on September 1, 2008.

In 2001 Eva Wagner-Pasquier was elected the successor of her father Wolfgang Wagner with 22 of 24 votes. However, her father refused to clear the space. After both Katharina Wagner and Eva Wagner-Pasquier had declared their willingness to cooperate, Wagner announced in a letter to the Board of Trustees that he would step down as festival director on August 31, 2008. The application period for a new director of the festival ran until the end of August 2008. Shortly before the deadline, another great-granddaughter of Richard Wagner, Nike Wagner , submitted an application to jointly direct the festival together with the renowned cultural manager Gerard Mortier .

On September 1, 2008, the Board of Trustees decided on the duo Eva Wagner-Pasquier and Katharina Wagner. The decision was commented on by the competitor and cousin of the two new leaders as a "strange procedure". With the departure of Wolfgang Wagner, the festival is now being organized by Bayreuther-Festspiel GmbH. This is made up of representatives from the Federal Republic of Germany, the Free State of Bavaria, the City of Bayreuth and the Society of Friends of Bayreuth , each with a 25% share of the vote .
