The German Orchestra Competition (DOW) is a musical competition organized by the German Music Council in cooperation with ARD . The aim of the competition is to promote instrumental music-making by amateurs in orchestras of various members. Through the competitive performance comparison, the quality and diversity of amateur orchestras in Germany should be presented and made public. The basic funding for the event is provided by the Minister of State for Culture .

The competition is aimed at ambitious non-professional orchestras and is advertised in different categories. Currently these are symphony orchestras , chamber orchestras , wind orchestras , brass ensembles , trombone choirs , minstrels' corps , plucked orchestras , zither ensembles , guitar ensembles , accordion orchestras , big bands and open line-ups. For youth orchestras, the evaluation takes place in separate categories.

The orchestras are registered for the national competition in a selection process carried out by the federal states by the regional music councils. As a rule, only one orchestra can be entered per category and state. The Advisory Board of the German Orchestra Competition admits the orchestras to the national competition. National orchestras are excluded from the competition; there are upper limits for the participation of instrumental musicians who are not laymen. The orchestras perform two or more works, including at least one of the proposed elective works. There is a special rating for contemporary music - including works that were composed only a few years ago. The lecture is usually evaluated by a professional jury of five people, with three of the jury members belonging to the respective category. The deliberations of the jury are not public, the decisions cannot be appealed.

The competition is complemented by advanced training events and the award of scholarships for orchestra conductors. In addition, compositions are commissioned, literature lists are compiled and audio documentation is created.
