Shanghai Biennale

The Shanghai Biennale is a 1994 founded Biennale in Shanghai . It has been the most important exhibition of contemporary international art in China since 2000 , when non-Chinese artists also took part for the first time . The main exhibition location is the Shanghai Art Museum .

1st Shanghai Biennale 1996

The first Shanghai Biennale, with the main theme Open Space , took place from March 8th to April 7th, 1996 . 160 works by 29 artists from China should show how Chinese art had developed into various forms and styles since the cultural opening.

2nd Shanghai Biennale 1998

The second Shanghai Biennale, with the main theme Inheritance and Exploration , took place from October 10th to November 20th, 1998 . In its 256 exhibits, the focus was on the latest developments in traditional Chinese ink painting .

3rd Shanghai Biennale 2000

The third Shanghai Biennale, with the main theme Spirit Of Shanghai , was the first international exhibition to which important contemporary artists from Europe, the USA, Africa and other Asian countries were invited. 67 artists from 18 nations showed over 300 works from November 6, 2000 to January 6, 2001 . The spectrum ranged from oil paintings, photographs, videos and sculptures to performances and architectural designs.

4th Shanghai Biennale 2002

In the fourth Shanghai Biennale from November 22, 2002 to January 20, 2003 , 68 artists and architects from 20 countries presented their work on the main theme of Urban Creation .

5th Shanghai Biennale 2004

The fifth Shanghai Biennale was dedicated to the close relationship between art, science and technology from September 29th to November 28th, 2004 under the motto Techniques of the Visible . The exhibition featured painting, sculpture, photography, new media, film, installation and performance by over 120 artists from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America, including Yoko Ono , Cindy Sherman and Zhang Xiaogang .

6th Shanghai Biennale 2006

The sixth Shanghai Biennale with the theme Hyper Design took place from September 5 to November 5, 2006. The artistic director was Zhang Qing, the curators Zhang Qing, Huang Du, Shu-Min Lin, Wonil Rhee, Gianfranco Maraniello, Jonathan Watkins and Xiao Xiaolan.

7th Shanghai Biennale 2008

The seventh Shanghai Biennale took place from September 9 to November 16, 2008 under the theme of Translocalmotion at the Shanghai Art Museum. The artistic director was ZhangQing, the curators Henk Slager, Julian Heynen , Xiang Liping and Li Ning.

8th Shanghai Biennale 2010

The eighth Shanghai Biennale took place from October 23, 2010 to February 28, 2011 under the theme Rehearsal at the Shanghai Art Museum.

9th Shanghai Biennale 2012

The ninth Shanghai Biennale took place from October 2, 2012 to March 31, 2013. Qiu Zhijie was chief curator, while Boris Groys, Jens Hoffmann and Johnson Chang were co-curators.
