Karsten Scholz (born November 6, 1969 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a German pianist and conductor .

biography

Scholz took piano lessons at the age of seven and soon began to write his first compositions. As a schoolboy he also opened up the organ literature. In 1987, Scholz began his pianist training with Wilhelm Neuhaus at the Cologne University of Music and with Olaf Dreßler in Munich as a young student (began studying in 1989 after graduating from high school). In 1992 he studied conducting with Volker Wangenheim in Cologne. Karsten Scholz worked as a conductor in 1998 at the Cologne Opera and at the Bielefeld Theater in 1999 before he decided to concentrate solely on working as a concert pianist and piano teacher.

His repertoire focuses on the works of the Viennese classics - especially the sonatas of Haydn and the 32 sonatas of Beethoven , - as well as the piano compositions of the Romantic period , emphasis on Schubert and Brahms - and the work of Franz Liszt . Another focus is the Second Vienna School , including the music of Olivier Messiaen .

Scholz gives concerts as an interpreter of contemporary music in premieres and campaigns for forgotten composers such as Ernst von Dohnanyi and Giuseppe Martucci .

He is a guest soloist and chamber music partner, and has worked with conductors Graeme Jenkins, Philippe Auguin , Bruno Weil , Peter Kuhn , Rainer Mühlbach, Alexander Joel , Helmut Imig , Herbert Blomstedt and Kurt Masur .

From 2009 on, Scholz played all 32 Beethoven sonatas in chronological order in a four-year concert cycle. A complete CD production has been released. Since 2013 he has devoted himself to a cycle of selected piano works by Franz Schubert, which is designed for six concert evenings.

Scholz is a piano teacher at the Braunschweig Music Academy .
