Alexander Joel

Alexander Joel (* 1971 in London ) is a British conductor and has been the first guest conductor of the Vlaamse Opera since the 2016/17 season .

Alexander Joel comes from the second marriage of his father Helmut Joel to the Englishwoman Audrey Joel. He is the grandson of Karl Amson Joel and half-brother of the American singer-songwriter Billy Joel .

Born in London, he grew up in Vienna, where he studied conducting, piano and composition at the Vienna Conservatory . He was a prizewinner at the Capuana competition in Spoleto and attended master classes in Tanglewood . At the age of 24 he made his debut at the Nuremberg Opera House , whereupon he was engaged as Kapellmeister at the Stadttheater Baden , the Stadttheater Klagenfurt and finally at the Vienna Volksoper .

From 2001 to 2007 he was first conductor of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf / Duisburg, where he directed a total of 35 different works.

At the beginning of the 2007/08 season, Joel took over the position of General Music Director of the Braunschweig State Theater and Chief Conductor of the Braunschweig State Orchestra , which he held until 2014.

Since the 2016/17 season, Alexander Joel has been Principal Guest Conductor of the Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp and Ghent. In October 2016 he took over the musical direction in Andrea Breth's new production of the Puccini opera Manon Lescaut with Eva-Maria Westbroek in the title role.

Joel regularly conducts at international stages and concert halls, including the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Dresden Semperoper , the Deutsche Oper Berlin , the Hamburg State Opera , the Zurich Opera House , the Grand Théâtre de Genève , the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, the Vienna Volksoper , De Nationale Opera in Amsterdam, the Royal Stockholm Opera , the Royal Copenhagen Opera , the Teatro Reggio in Parma, the Finnish National Opera or the Teatro Municipal in Santiago de Chile .

In 2016 he made his US debut at the Boston Lyric Opera .

As a concert conductor , he has performed with the MDR Symphony Orchestra , the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin , the Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna , the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra , the Staatskapelle Dresden and the Orchester de la Suisse Romande .

In the 2016/17 season Joel is responsible for the musical direction of Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden . The director is Uwe Eric Laufenberg , with premieres for Rheingold in November, Walküre in January and Siegfried and Götterdämmerung in April 2017. The International May Festival in April / May 2017 will be followed by two complete cycles.
