The Boston Lyric Opera (BLO) is an American opera based in Boston , Massachusetts . It was founded in 1976.

The BLO season consists of three major operas with choir and orchestra, presented at the Citi Performing Arts Center Shubert Theater in Boston, and a one-hour, English-language abbreviated version of a popular opera for school children and families, which then tours all over New England .

The opera is funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council . She is known for the fact that, in addition to the popular works, she also presents rarities, especially from American opera literature, such as Bernstein's Trouble in Tahiti . In 2010 a composition was commissioned to Richard Beaudoin .

In February 2011 Viktor Ullmann's Der Kaiser von Atlantis was played, a work that was created in the Theresienstadt concentration camp .
