Cotonificio Bernocchi Legnano

The Bernocchi SpA was founded in 1818, the global Italian fashion company based in Milan . It was owned by the family until it was closed in 1971.

history

The family business goes back to a tailor shop founded in 1818 in Gabinella near Legnano . In 1868 Rodolfo Bernocchi expanded the tailoring to include a company for bleaching and dyeing fabrics. Around 1874, the founder's sons Michele, Andrea and Antonio Bernocchi gradually joined the company. In 1898 the company became the joint stock company Cotonificio Bernocchi and a cotton mill ( spinning mill ) was built in Legano. In the following years, under Antonio Bernocchi as a member of the board, the company expanded and modern textile factories opened in Nerviano , Cerro Maggiore , Angera , Besnate and Cogozzo, making the company one of the largest Italian textile companies. In addition to fashion, Bernocchi developed the well-known Luminator Bernocchi in 1929, an illuminated clothes rack for the presentation of its own products and advertised with posters by well-known designers, such as B. Marcello Nizzoli were designed. After Antonio Bernocchi's death in 1930, his sons Andrea and Tommaso Bernocchi took over the management of the company in the third generation.

After the Second World War , the structures in the textile industry changed and Bernocchi ran into economic difficulties. After an attempt by Andrea and Tommaso Bernocchi in 1970 to obtain government funding failed, the operations were closed and the company was officially liquidated on December 2, 1971. In the year of closure, the six production sites employed a total of 1,400 people.
