Antonio Bernocchi (born January 17, 1859 in Castellanza , Varese province , † December 8, 1930 in Milan ) was an Italian politician , textile entrepreneur and patron .

Life

Family and career

Bernocchi was born in the province of Varese in Lombardy in northern Italy. He was one of three sons of Rodolfo Bernocchi and Angela Colombo. He attended the technical school (Scuola Tecnica) in Busto Arsizio , which he left without a degree. At the age of 15 he started to work for a father who at that time owned a small factory for bleaching textiles in Legnano . In 1898 his father founded a textile company, the "Cotonificio Bernocchi", in Legnano, which grew very successfully and expanded constantly; factories were opened in Nerviano , Cerro Maggiore and Angera . Bernocchi took over his father's cotton mill and textile factory at an early stage. He built and expanded the company from significant and eventually became president ( Presidente ) of the guided as a public company "Società anonima cotoniera Bernocchi". He was a member of the General Assembly ( Consiglio generale ) of the Association of Italian Textile Companies. In 1905 he was awarded the Italian Labor Merit Award. He was allowed to use the title "Cavaliere del Lavoro".

He was married to Camilla Nava. After his death he was buried in the Cimitero Monumentale central cemetery in Milan. In 1936 a large monument was built on his grave by the architect Alessandro Minali and the sculptor Giannino Castiglioni.

From 1901 to 1902 Bernocchi was mayor ( Sindaco ) of Legnano. In 1929 he was named Grand Commander ("Grande ufficiale") of the Order of the Crown of Italy . On February 25, 1929 was appointed Senator of the Senato del Regno (Eng. "Senate of the Kingdom"). On May 15, 1929 it was formally confirmed ( Convalida ); on May 18, 1929, he took the oath of office. Since the Senators were appointed for life, he was a member of the Senate until his death in December 1930.

Donors and patrons

Bernocchi was one of Milan's most famous patrons . He initiated numerous charitable foundations and made philanthropic donations. After the Italian defeat in the Battle of Caporetto in November 1917, he was one of the first donors to the newly founded welfare organization “La Patria Riconoscente” to care for war veterans; from her later the welfare organization "Opera Nazionale Combattenti" emerged. He made financial donations for the establishment and expansion of schools and hospitals in Legnano; two schools were also named after him. In Legnano, he built a technical school ( Istituto tecnico ) and a vocational school ( Istituto professionale ). He also founded schools for the education of mothers and in 1935 the "Scuola Comunale A. Bernocchi di Legnano". He was a sponsor of La Scala in Milan .

His most important donation was a bequest in 1930 to the city of Milan in the amount of 5 million lire for the construction of the Palazzo dell'Arte, the site of the Milan Triennale ( Esposizione Triennale Internazionale delle Arti Decorative e Industriali Moderne e dell'Architettura Moderna ) in Parco Sempione . The pavilion, known as Palazzo Bernocchi, was designed by Giovanni Muzio between 1931 and 1933 . The construction was financed by Bernocchi and his two brothers Andrea and Michele.

The famous Italian cycle race Coppa Bernocchi , which has been held in Legnano since 1919, is named after Antonio Bernocchi.
