The Simplonpark ( Italian Parco Sempione ; also Sempionepark ) is a 386,000 m² urban green space in Milan . It is located northwest of the city center (Centro Storico / Zone 1 ). The Castello Sforzesco borders to the northwest and the Arco della Pace is located on the northwest side . To the east of the park is the Arena Civica, opened by Napoleon Bonaparte .

The park was built on a former parade ground and opened in 1893. The design comes from Emilio Alemagna († 1910) from 1888.
The name comes from Corso Sempione , the street that begins in the north-west of the park at Arco della Pace and led in Napoleon's time over the Simplon Pass (Italian: Passo del Sempione ) to Paris .
The Simplonpark has driveways that can be driven by carriages and several sculptures, including a. the equestrian monument of Napoleon III. Ducks and other animals live in the park's pond . a. also turtles .
Numerous exhibitions took place on the park grounds, such as the 1906 World Exhibition , the only one of which is still the Art Nouveau building of the Acquario Civico . In 1933, on the occasion of the fifth Triennale di Milano, the Torre Branca observation tower by Gio Ponti was built in the west of the park. In addition, the Palazzo dell'Arte was built by the architect Giovanni Muzio , which today houses the Design Museum.
The Bar Bianco and the Padiglione Soggiorno (architects Ico Parisi and Silvio Longhi) were built for the Xth Triennale in 1954, and the latter now houses a public library .
In 1996, the city council decided to extensively restore the park, the castle and the Piazza Sempione, on which the Arco della Pace is located. The park got a new fence, restored streets, a botanical freshening up of the plants and some video cameras for surveillance. The restoration was completed in 2003.

Immediately in front of the statue of Napoleon III. there is an old monumental elm . A large horse chestnut tree grows next to the “ Bridge of the Mermaids ” . Other noteworthy trees are: a plane tree on the bank of the pond, two large Caucasus walnut trees. There are also different types of cedar : B. the Atlas cedar , the Himalayan cedar , or the incense cedar . You can also find red oaks , European yew trees , swamp trees and linden trees . Moreover, some maple varieties : the silver maple , the ash-maple , the maple , the sycamore maple and Norway maple .
Between the tall trees there are also pines , beeches , poplars , usually horse chestnuts , holm oaks and magnolias . Also are black alder , black walnuts , ginkgo and sweetgum to find.
After the restoration, some species came with winter bloomers, such as B. the witch hazel , the Loropetalum , the winter flower and some varieties of Mahonia . Other new spring and summer species include dogwood , snowballs , hydrangeas , camellias , rhododendrons , azaleas and old roses .
Park
The paths in Parco Sempione were named after famous writers from all over the world. In addition to Viale Shakespeare or Viale Cervantes , Viale Goethe and Viale Schiller are also in the park.
Others
The park can be reached with the red and green metro lines via the Cardona FN , Cairoli and Lanza stations .
The park has its own free WiFi signal.
