Ico Parisi , actually Domenico Parisi (born September 23, 1916 in Palermo , † December 19, 1996 in Como ), was an Italian architect and designer . He was one of the most important stylists of Italian furniture design in the 1950s.

Parisi saw himself as a “ Renaissance artist ” who was equally interested in all forms of art: in his more than fifty years as an architect, industrial designer, painter, documentary filmmaker, photographer and installation artist.

Ico Parisi lived in Como for most of his life , where his father, an artist connected to naturalism , worked as an art teacher since 1920. In the years 1931–1935 he trained in construction .

In 1935, Parisi joined the studio of the architect Giuseppe Terragni , whose Casa del Fascio in Como he published in 1936 as a photographer in a special edition of Quadrante magazine . In the following years he also gained experience as a documentary and experimental filmmaker with Como + Como + Como (1937) and Risanamento Edilizio della Cittá di Como (German: structural renovation of the city of Como, 1939).

With Fulvio Cappelletti, Giovanni Galfetti and Silvio Longhi he was involved in the design of the colonial exhibition in 1937 at Villa Olmo in Como. After the success of their contribution, the four founded the artist group Alta Quota .

In 1940 Parisi was drafted as a pontooner for military service and used in France, Yugoslavia and Russia.

After his return from the war, Parisi founded the Atelier La Ruota , which specializes in interior decoration, in 1948 with his wife Luisa Aiani, a student of Gio Ponti . In addition to furniture for companies such as Cassina , MIM Altamir, Longhi and Cappellini, they also designed ceramics, glasses and jewelry. He took on orders for furnishing the State Library in Milan and setting up the journalist exhibition at the Triennale in 1948. He also worked closely with painters and sculptors such as Mario Radice, Fausto Melotti and Umberto Milani.

Parisi turned increasingly to architecture and finished his architecture studies in 1950 at the Atheneum in Lausanne . In 1956 he joined the Italian Associazione per il Disegno Industriale .

Parisi was friends with the architect Gio Ponti, from whom he was inspired by the principle of “fare insieme”, of working together, and who felt inspired by his creativity.

Through the contact with the art critics Pierre Restany and Enrico Crispolti , projects arose that confronted and merged art and architecture, such as the Ipotesi per una Casa Esistentiale (hypothesis for a house to survive) started in 1972 . After Parisi had published his first book on photography, he began serial production of “Utopia”, which was exhibited at the 1978 Venice Biennale .

He exhibited at the 34th Salon des Artistes Décorateurs in Paris and designed the interior of the Milan library in 1947. He then set up the interior of the exhibition for journalism at the Triennale .

In the 80s, Parisi focused more on installations and performance , in which he engages with the mass media . With these projects he took part in the documenta urbana in Kassel in 1982 and the exhibition Les années 50 in 1988 at the Center Pompidou in Paris.

Almost ten years later, Parisi's first solo exhibition in Milan was dedicated to: Ico Parisi: l'Officina del possibile (Ico Parisi: The workshop of the possible), followed by three more.
