Pontooner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pontoniers are groups of engineers designed to build bridges . In Germany they were included in the engineer battalions , formed special units in armies of other countries and belonged to the field artillery in France and in almost all modern armies .

Emergence

Even before the institutionalization of pontoon troops at the turn of the 17th century to the 18th century , pontoon trains existed in many armies . The origins of the purely military pontoon can be found in the Netherlands in the 17th century. The main task of the pontoon troops was to ensure the ability to move across waters , mainly with the help of war and floating bridges ( pontoon bridges ).
