Castellanza is an Italian commune ( comune ) in the province of Varese in the Lombardy region .

geography

The municipality borders on the metropolitan city of Milan . The Olona flows through Castellanza . Since 1974 the municipality has had the title Città (city). In 1869, the municipality was formed by the merger of the former municipality of Castellanza with Castegnata Olona. Castellanza is located about 28 kilometers northwest of Milan and about 25 kilometers south of Varese . The covers an area of ​​6.92  km² . The groups Buon Gesù and Castegnate belong to Castellanza . The neighboring municipalities are Busto Arsizio , Legnano (MI), Marnate , Olgiate Olona and Rescaldina (MI).

history

The district Castegnate is of Celtic origin and was created between the 1st century before and the 1st century AD. The first written mention can be dated to the year 1045. Castellanza is first mentioned in a document in 1361.

In 1991 the Università Carlo Cattaneo was founded here as a private university specializing in economics, engineering and law. The number of students reached around 3,000 in 2009.

The A8 autostrada runs through the municipality . The next junction is in Legnano . Strada Statale 33 and Strada Statale 527 also pass by. A train station connects the town to the railway line between Novara and Saronno or Seregno . The former railway line of the Ferrovie della Valmorea has now been closed with regard to the section to Castellanza.
