Lonate Pozzolo is an Italian commune ( comune ) in the province of Varese in the Lombardy region . The municipality borders directly on the metropolitan city of Milan and the province of Novara ( Piedmont region ).

geography

Lonate Pozzolo is located about 32 kilometers from Novara and about 35 kilometers from Varese in the Valle del Ticino . The Ticino ( Ticino ) flows west of the municipality. The municipality covers an area of ​​29.12  km² . The Sant'Antonino Ticino and Tornavento fractions belong to Lonate Pozzolo. The neighboring municipalities are Bellinzago Novarese (NO), Castano Primo (MI), Ferno , Nosate (MI), Oleggio (NO), Samarate , Vanzaghello (MI) and Vizzola Ticino .

history

The community is first mentioned in a document from the Bishop of Novara Aupaldo in 973. However, its location on the edge of the old oratory of San Giovanni Battista testifies to an ancient Longobard presence , and in the historical center there are even traces of Roman centurions. Already at the beginning of the 13th century Lonate was a center of some importance. Although the economy was mainly based on agriculture, it already had consuls, statutes and notaries located near the important Como - Novara road and the Ticino derivation of a great canal called Naviglio Grande, which dates back to 1135.

Economy and Transport

The company Cargoitalia had its seat in Lonate Pozzolo . Due to the proximity to the airport of Milan-Malpensa ( Aeroporto Malpensa ) about 5 kilometers away, the municipality is ideal as a seat for aviation companies. In addition to DHL and FedEx , Amazon has also been operating a logistics center at this location since October 2017 . Amazon uses ASL Airlines France flights to Milan Malpensa Airport, but is also planning flights with its own airline Prime Air .

Ferno- Lonate Pozzolo station has been in existence since 2009 and is served by trains on the route from Busto Arsizio to the airport. Until June 2011 there was also a connection to the Milan S-Bahn via the S10 line.
