Castelveccana is an Italian commune ( comune ) in the province of Varese in the Lombardy region .
geography
Castelvecanna is located on the east bank of Lake Maggiore on the northern and western slopes of the 1235 m slm high Monte Nudo and covers an area of 20 km² . The municipality of Porto Valtravaglia is just a little further north on the lakeshore , and the municipality of Laveno-Mombello is a little further south on the lakeshore . The district of Caldè lies directly on the lake shore on the flood plain of the Froda (also called Caldè) and the Rio dell'Asino (Eselsbach). The steep lakeshore towards Laveno-Mombello is only sparsely populated, the one in the north on the municipal border with Porto Valtravaglia is sealed off by the rock Rocca di Caldè , which stretches along the shore. The hilly hinterland is largely forested.
Castelvecanna is subdivided into a total of 11 fractions (Italian frazioni ): Ronchiano , Caldè , Saltirana , Castello , Bissaga , Orile , Nasca , Rasate , Pessina , San Pietro , Sarigo and Veccana . The neighboring municipalities are: Brenta , Casalzuigno , Cittiglio , Ghiffa ( VB ), Laveno-Mombello , Oggebbio ( VB ) and Porto Valtravaglia .
history
Castelveccana, which was still called Castello until 1863 , was named after a castle that was destroyed in 963 by the intervention of Otto I in Italy and despite stubborn defense on the part of Berengar II . The castle was rebuilt under the rule of the Visconti , Rusca and Borromeo , before it was finally destroyed in 1513 by the Confederates during the Milan Wars. Today there are almost no remains of the castle.
Castelveccana was created in 1928 through the merger of today's Veccana fraction with the municipality of Castello Valtravaglia.
