Morazzone is a northern Italian municipality ( comune ) in the province of Varese in Lombardy .
geography
The municipality is located about 5 kilometers south of Varese on the Tenore and Torrente Arno ; Morazzone covers an area of 5.48 km² . The fractions Centro storico, Roccolo, Roncaccio, Mezzanella, Pagliate and Cuffia belong to Morazzone. The neighboring municipalities are Brunello , Caronno Varesino , Castiglione Olona , Castronno , Gazzada Schianno , Gornate-Olona and Lozza .
history
The place Morazzone gained in importance when it became a fortress of the city of Milan at the end of the 12th century . Morazzone was later involved in the endless fighting between the Visconti and the Torriani and followed the events around the castrum of Castelseprio , which was destroyed in 1287 by the Archbishop of Milan, Ottone Visconti .
Within a few decades, Lombardy was occupied by the Spanish crown. Morazzone was taken on August 19, 1647 after the decision of the Kingdom of Spain to occupy the free lands of Lombardy. Morazzone returned to stability after the unstable political and social situation of the Napoleonic period when it was attached to the municipality of Caronno Ghiringhello under the Austrian government . On August 26, 1848, the site was the scene of armed fighting between a small contingent of Giuseppe Garibaldi and Austrian troops.
With the creation of the Province of Varese in 1927, Morazzone left the Province of Como , to which it had belonged since 1801, and became part of the new province.

Attractions
- Parish church, built 1814–1817. The documents show that the pastor Don Francesco Pesenti around 1810 considered the construction of a larger church necessary and handed the design over to the architect Simone Cantoni (1739-1818).
- Oratory of San Giuseppe in 1907 was built next to the left side of the church; inside there are old walls of the earlier 16th century church with the fresco Sant'Ambrogio (16th century) attributed to Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli called Il Morazzone or School.
- Santa Maria Madre Church was probably built in the 15th century on top of an earlier chapel, dating from at least the 13th century, as shown by the wall sections that came to light during the most recent restoration in 1987–1988. Inside there are votive pictures from the 15th and 16th centuries: Rochus of Montpellier next to a fragment of the nativity scene (with the valuable Sank Joseph), a Madonna and Child enthroned , Saint Anthony the Great (patron saint of farmers) and the remains of a figure of a holy bishop (Ambrogio?). A remnant of a crucifixion is carried over the side door. Above the altars of the apse and the chapel on the left there is a Madonna and Child and in the apse Sant'Antonio Abate .
- Santa Maria Maddalena Church (remains)
- Bell tower built between 1582 and 1646 next to the Sant'Ambrogio church. It took 64 years to build due to the lack of funds raised by the Morazzone believers through their offerings. The five bells were cast in 1859 by the Felice Bizzozero foundry in Varese.
