Comerio is an Italian commune ( comune ) in the province of Varese in the Lombardy region .
geography
The municipality is located about seven kilometers west-northwest of Varese near Lake Varese and covers an area of 5.65 km² : Comerio includes the districts Casa Muro , Villa Laughier , Vigne , Chignolo , Oroco , Picca , Quarte , Mattello , Cascina Campi , Caddè , Cavernago , Grotta del Remeron , Grotta della Scondurava , Grotta del Motterello , Motterello and Punta Merigett . The neighboring communities are Barasso , Castello Cabiaglio , Cuvio and Gavirate .
history
In the 4th century BC, the area was reached by the Celts , who chose the strategic location between Milan and Lake Maggiore and Como to found the agglomeration of Kunmaer , the first name of the settlement. The name was changed over the years to Gunmeri , Gomeri , Gomera , Gomero and in the municipality time Comero and finally in today's Comerio .

traffic
State road 394 runs through the municipality from Varese to the Swiss border. The Barasso-Comerio train station is in the neighboring municipality of Barasso on the railway line from Saronno to Laveno .
Industry
In 1946, the Milanese entrepreneur Giovanni Borghi founded the household appliance manufacturer SIRI , better known as Ignis, specializing in the manufacture of household appliances. It was acquired by the Dutch multinational Philips in 1972 and became the property of the American Whirlpool Corporation in 1991 .
