Laveno-Mombello is an Italian commune ( comune ) in the province of Varese in the Lombardy region .
geography
The community lives mainly from weekend tourism from Milan . From Laveno there is a car ferry to Verbania- Intra (the only ferry connection across Lake Maggiore), which makes the place very important in terms of transport. From here there is also a direct train connection to Milan. The municipality covers an area of 25 km² . The Casere, Cerro, Mombello and Ponte fractions belong to Laveno-Mombello. Neighboring municipalities are Caravate , Castelveccana , Cittiglio , Ghiffa ( Verbano-Cusio-Ossola Province ), Leggiuno , Sangiano , Stresa (VB) and Verbania (VB).
history
The origin of the name of the place from the Roman general Labienus , who is said to have fought a battle against the Gauls at today's Mombello , is not certain, which is said to have given the site the name "mons belli" (mountain of war).
In the Middle Ages it was a village that was inhabited by fishermen. The most important noble families were the Visconti and Borromeo families , to whom the area was granted, the Tinelli di Gorla, the Counts Guilizzoni and the Sessa de Ceresolo, owners of the village of Ceresolo in Cerro. From the nineteenth century it housed the famous ceramic factories, which were among the largest in Europe. The factories that have now been closed have turned into a ceramic museum, one of the most interesting museums in the city.
In 1856 a ceramic industry emerged in Laveno , which was important until the 1970s, but has almost completely disappeared today.
