Toponomics

The name Vizzola is derived from the dialectal word Vegiola or Vezzola , a unit of measurement for the wine produced around Bergamo and Piacenza .

history

Some finds dating back to the 10th century BC suggest the presence of an Etruscan settlement in the area, while others certainly confirm the presence of the Romans .

Most of the graves found date from the late Latène culture (2nd and 1st centuries BC).

In the Middle Ages, the two centers of Vizzola and Castelnovate were part of the Quinzano feud and were ruled by several families, including that of the Visconti family of Cislago, who had their main local representative in Caesar Marquis of Cislago. Vizzola stayed with the Visconti until 1716.

Attractions

  • Parish Church of San Giulio: it was rebuilt in 1579 on an already existing building of older origin (also mentioned in the Liber Sanctorum Mediolanensis by Goffredo da Bussero in the 13th century) and expanded for the first time in 1674 and towards the end of the 18th century.
  • Castle located in Castelnovate (now only visible in ruins), it is probably of early medieval origin, perhaps on the ruins of a late ancient Roman castrum . The few remains, between the city and the Ticino (river) , are overgrown with vegetation.
  • Villa Della Croce Caproni, built by the Della Croce family in the neoclassical style and bought by the Caproni family in the 1920s. Noteworthy are the three arches of the central facade, which are framed by a triangular tympanum and the wrought iron gate, which was formed in the 18th century as an interweaving of branches and leaves.
  • Villa Caproni (now Villa Malpensa) was built in 1920 by Count Giovanni Battista Caproni as his residence near the airfields where he conducted his exercises. The building, which is characterized by an imposing facade with an "E" structure, rises over three floors and is decorated in the upper part with stucco and paintings.
