history
The origin of the name Besano is unclear, two possible explanations compete: In ancient times, an old, probably Celtic fortification was converted by the Romans into a camp from which the connection to Ceresio was controlled. This is attested by the grave of the Roman general Besso, after whom the country is said to have been named. The second explanation goes back to an ancient market that took place twice a year. Accordingly, Besano stands for the Latin up to in anno (German: twice a year).
In the Middle Ages Besano belonged to the Arcisate manor. With the appointment of Maurizio Arcimboldi as Marquis of Arcisate by Philip IV , King of Spain and Duce of Milan , in 1647 Besano came under the jurisdiction of the royal family. From 1928 to 1953 Besano was part of the municipality of Porto Ceresio .

paleontology
Since the mid-19th century, fossils of marine dinosaurs , fish , mussels , snails and cephalopods have been found in the area northeast of Besano . In 1863 the Società Italiana di Scienze Naturali organized a first excavation, in 1878 a second was carried out by the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Milano . New species as well as very well preserved skeletons of previously sparsely documented species were discovered. The Besanosaurus leptorhynchus , discovered there in 1993, owes its name to this site. Finds have been shown in the Museo di Besano since 1981.
