Malnate is an Italian commune ( comune ) in the province of Varese in the Lombardy region .
geography
The municipality borders on the province of Como and is located about 3 kilometers southeast of Varese between Monte Morone (494 m above sea level) and Monte Casione (452 m above sea level) in the valley of the Rio Lanza and Gaggiolo ; here it flows into the river Olona . There are numerous caves in the nearby Parco Valle del Lanza . The municipality covers an area of 8 km² . Malnate includes the Baraggia, Folla, Gurone, Rogoredo, Rovera, San Salvatore and Valle factions. The neighboring municipalities are Vedano Olona , Lozza , Binago , Cagno , Cantello , Solbiate and Varese.

history
With the fall of the Western Roman Empire , the area suffered several invasions by Ostrogoths and Lombards . Between 1160 and 1183 it suffered looting and destruction during the passage of the troops of Frederick Barbarossa , who moved from Como to fight Varese . Malnate first appears in 1132 in a deed between Landolfo and Guglielmo, uncle and nephew, in favor of Pietro Gualapo.

Malnate is on State Road 342 . To the west of the municipality, the former state road 233 runs towards Milan . Malnate is connected to the rail network with a train station on the Saronno – Laveno line.
